Header decition on a 383 500HP SBC.
I know people have asked similar questions, but I just can't find a straight answer to this question...
What headers, (size, company, primaries, collector) do you guys recomend for a 383 stroker that is gonna be putting out around 500 HP, on the street.
And maybe even muffler recomendations. All I know is that I need something in-line because I am dumpin it before the rear. My site has my old/bad idea...

i would go with the hooker LT's...1 3/4 prims, 3" collector i believe...then run dual 3" or 2.5" back to a pair of mufflers...i would go with something thin...i have mine dumped before the axle, and mine are 4" cases, and hang kinda low...go with like a ultra flo or maybe aerochambers...flowmasters are 5.5", definately don't use them...

My car ran the same times open header and with exhaust hooked up.
Hooker super comp LT 1 3/4" primaries 3" collectors
dual 3" exhaust-no H or X pipe
Flowmaster 40 series dumped before rear end

I broke out my old high performance engines book, and the chart says...
For a 350 CID engine:
(The RPM is where you want your peak torque to be)
3000 RPM -> 1 1/2"
4000 RPM -> 1 5/8" to 1 3/4"
5000 RPM -> 1 7/8"
6000 RPM -> 2 "
7000 RPM -> 2 1/4" to 2 1/2"
For a 396 its about a size bigger at each RPM.

Awsome, thatnks for the help guys. I will def go with the Hooker LT's and dunmp before the rear. Now I have to decided on mufflers. One guy says he is using flowmaster with good results, and another says don't use them at all, due to clearance. i am very interested in clearance.
What is a nice thin muffler, and how close can I put it to the body? Like almost touching or what?
Thanks for any help

For a cased body muffler flowmaster was the thinnest at the time at 4" thick, and I have mine mounted so it touches the floorboards for max clearance.
You can use Bullet mufflers, but they are VERY loud-ie open header loud.
Spin tech make a 2 or 2.5" thick case muffler but you need ot use oval tubing to hook into it.
Or if your good with a welder you could make your own mufflers.

flowmaster 40's are like 5 1/2" thick now....the ultraflo is an excellent muffler, and very slim...the aerochamber is thin as well...i have spintech's, and they are pressed right up against the flowboards...i'm lowered 1.75" on stock tires and i scrape only once in a while....

Thanks for the insite.
I am leaning towards oval piping, a little more $ but if it saves me from scraping even once I think it will be worth it. Are there any down sides to this idea?
Oval pipes and of course oval mufflers. realy tucked up.
And does anyone know a cheap place to buy oval pipes? Thanks again.

I'm running dual 3in exhaust that dumps before the rear axle using Edelbrock RPM mufflers. They're only 3 1/2 inches thick. I also ran the same 1/4 mile times through this exhaust as with open headers. Theres some pics of my setup on my webpage, just click the exhaust link on the main page if you want to see it.
