exhaust pipe insulation
on my 86 t/a the right rear exhaust pipe ( where it goes over the axle) is only about an inch away from the fuel tank. there is no heat shield in between them. does anyone think that putting some insulation around the pipe to help keep the fuel cool would help with performance or gas mileage at all. i'm just wondering because my gas milage is really bad.

Notice on my 88 there are heat shields all over back there. I'd think it's a good idea but I'd try to put a metal shield between them or insulate the tank rather than the exhaust pipe. And high temp insulation is pretty hard to find, seems like. Don't know if it would really make a difference in mileage but a hot spot on the gas tank can't be good.

my car has a heat shield back there but it only covers the muffler, not the pipe that goes into it. i'm not even sure if it is the one that is supposed to go on the car.
thanks for the advice.
