Sure you can do it, but why would you want to?
One problem would be the heat from the exhaust melting the side ground effects.

At a car show years ago I saw a earlier Z (82-84 with the high GFX) with sidepipes. The license plate said "lgbrner" or something like that.

i think pipes running al the way along the side would be too big of a ground clearence issue, 3rd gens are just so low. i think its cool when just the exhaust tips point out right in front of the rear wheels though. even then, ground clearence would be an issue but not as much, becasue if something were to hit the pipe right in front of the wheel, then the wheel is going to be hitting one hell of a bump, so you probably wouldnt be driving over it to begin with, if that makes sence.
now what would be cool, is if you somehow made the gfx attach to the pipes, then like cut out a big long slit so you could see some of the pipe, then have like a section of the gfx where the tip points out...that would look sweet but very unpractically because the exhaust would have to run right tight against the gfx making it melt.....so really, there isn't a good way of doing it...

This is not my car. I saved this picture from sethirdgen.org awhile back.
IMO, sidepipes on 3rd gens look awful. However if you like them then go for it.

Tibo.... Those aint the true "tuned" side pipes where each header tube goes down to the side pipes, but it is true working side pipes.
1 and only 1 pipe is real, hooks up with a bend, then bolts to header coll. The other pipes are pipe just to make it look like tuned side pipes.
You can buy that style from www.jcw.com

DONT GET THE DYNO MAX KIT!!!!!! It doesnt come out like they say it does, it looks REALLY BAD. Both exit out the driver side rear straight out the bumper like the stock, but only on 1 side. Together. Im getting rid of mine and doing something like the purple hornies. If you really want it ill sell you mine. I hate it. Plus it fits horrible. I have a big dent in one pipe because it sits about 2" off the ground on a hard brake it rubs. BAD BAD BAD stuff

Yeah I have decided to do something just like the purple hornys but just put some dynomax Bullet mufflers on it. By the way does anyone know how the Dynomax Bullet mufflers sound like and what the Moroso Spiral Flow mufflers sound like?

on my '89 V6, I had removed the cat and replaced it with a flowmaster 3" muffler, put a 90 on the other end and finished it with a tip. only about 4" of the tip was visible and the edge of the tip lined up with the body of the car and exited right after the pass door jamb.

Car is lowered 2" all the way around. It is 3" with single chambers and its ovalized where it needs to be. I have to avoid speed bumps but if the car was stock height it wouldn't be too bad. Its extremely loud.

Sidepipes can look ok... I'm lookin at doing not the true side pipes, but side exit exhuast from a zoomie style tip.... I just don't think the round tube coming out the side really suits the square straight edgeness of the 3rd gens.
Just my 2 cents though.

i really wanna do side exits. Maybe we can get pics in here of people that have done that. Side pipes are the best lookin thing on old vettes but a bit dated on our cars i think.
Lets see what kind of ideas anyone is tossing around or done for side pipes....
I am gonna go 2210's then go into 3.5 oval pipe, find my way to each side, hopefully think of a way for a crossover, then 2 oval spintechs and angle tips before the massivetires i am runnin'

Yeah, so what if that is the point of side pipes? I never said it wasn't. I said it looks dated......
Might wanna think over what you post, to make sure you are quoting the right phrase.

I'm just saying that sidepipes are generally used on cars that are more for function than style. Looks don't matter. My whole exhaust together can't weigh more than 25 or 30 pounds. If I went with a rear exit instead, it would have added 10 or 20 more pounds and more restriction.

Hold up, are you talking about the sidepipes that stay under the car like mine, or are you talking about the sidepipes that sit under the gfx?

Side exit = ub3r-sw33r
But I'd use some sorta rectangular tips instead of circular. Supreme Member

pipes
I bet there is a good tastful way to make side pipes on our cars, its just that no one had found it yet
I am still tossing around ideas. Do people have any sketches or ideas as to how to make side pipes work. Maybe not even total side pipes, like some kind of new ideas.

I am confident enough to say that if you heared my car, you would love it.
I think you should sell your system and build a motor, cause an exhaust only sounds as good as the motor making the noise.

tru but..... ponder this.... my weak 305 has been mistaken more than a few times for a 350 by 350 powered Thirdgens on sound alone.. performance is another story( a sad one )... as for the build a motor....
i am building one... a sick 350 that should be shredding the gears in my trans as of this weekend if all goes well.....
Alum heads, big nasty cam, alum intake, all matched..... *wipes drool* i been waiting a lil more than a year for this.... i cant wait.
BTW the flowmasters will stay... and when i do redo my exhasut im getting some 2.5" super 40s... although ive heard either the bullits or the spiral mufflers( cant remeber) on a worked 350 thirdgen at school.... sounded really cool but not as deep as mine
edit: as of yet i havent heard a glasspack system that i like.... most of the time its on these * Cough Red-KNeCK Cough* trucks which the exhaust pipes sit at my window level.... i really hate them but besides that fact, i dont like the "Thwappy" sound they make
