Dual Mufflers in Stock Location

for a while now, i've been looking for a bullet style muffler that I liked. and since hardly anybody have used a variaty of them, its hard to find some decent reviews on them. everybody just goes with bullets, because they are cheap, easy, and effective.

But what I want to do is continue on my dual dumps, over the axle, crisscross through some mufflers, than out the back. And I felt that I needed bullet style mufflers, becuase room is gonna be a factor, and I had the thought that I'm not gonna fit anything else back there...

so that got me thinking, can i fit my 2 mufflers (spintech pro streets) i have now back there some way? the case is 4x6x 12inches long. now that is a pretty small muffler, and if they were stacked together and placed up on there side, the case would measure 8" wide, and 6" tall, and of course the 12 inches long. now that isn't that big of a case, and I looked at the flowmaster 80 series cross flow, and that measure 5x10x18 or so? but my proboem is, i have offset in, and center out...I can't seem to visualize it, but do you guys see a problem with this? will it work??

You're not alone my man... I made basically dual bullets wrapped in a single case on my car.



The sound... ****. Volume@wot... not to my liking.. too loud (like open pipe loud). If ever I get to the point of this turd running again.. I will be making a 'mini-me' pair of turbos combined in a single case. Just what you see only hopefully, more quiet.
Out of all the looking and calling, I couldn't find jack that fit perfectly for dual mufflers at the rear or that would fit in the OEM position. That led me to making my own. More time consuming but, cheaper R&D for testing which will get the sound I want on my part since it's just time & materials on my part.
Good luck on your quest.

Willie has the most perfect OEM routed setup I've seen to date... unfortunatly, nothing that can resemble a (real) muffler will fit in the OEM position still.

yea yours is identical to what i would be doing, but with dual mufflers...yours looks so clean, i like it...

do you guys think i can fit dual spintechs? i hate being away from my car!

I couldn't telll you about spintech. When I was looking prior to building, I called pacesetter, flowmaster, dynomax & edelbrock for case dimensions. None had a case small enough that would even fit (symmetric mind you) dual at the rear bumper. Bullets were the only reply to such a confined space.
IIRC, the case to my current setup is 20-22"w x 10-11"d x 3.5-4"h. This was the largest case (could make it taller than 4"..) that would fit in the OEM area and still have room for all the inlet/outlet bends to go straight into the case.

IIRC as well.. the 67-99 or 70-73 camaro's used a dual in/out muffler at one time. I do remember seeing Flomaster making a repo of this system... for a quite loft price though. If I had a little deeper pockets.. I'd have probably bought the muffler instead of making my own.

The tight constraints under these cars (anywhere) makes unique exhaust quite the creative challenge.

well mine should be more confined than yours...becuase if i stack them together, it would be taller than 4" inches, it would actually be 6 inches tall....which shouldn't matter, it should look alright, but than it would be about 8 inches wide instead of your 10-11", and it would be shorter than your 18" inches, becuase the mufflers are only 12" long...so in reality it should work..but it might seem like its too tall under there, but the flowmaster muffler is 5" tall, so another inch won't look too bad...I don't really care if it hangs a little lower anyways....

so I think it will work, don't you? Do you think the inlet and outlets will work out? both mufflers are offset in, center out...

So deadbird, lemme ask u.. if i wanted to do the exact set up you have, could i technically buy the bullets and bring them to an exhaust shop?? I want my LOUD.. but a good sound. is that what yours is? I want a deep, low tone but loud. I now have Flowmaster 80 series and well.. its just not cutting it. I may do ur set up or mayber just add headers which in the end will def be cheaper.. sorry for all the questions but this intrigues me

klumb- the only thig I would see 'bad' with that would be the appearance. The outlet of one side would have to angle back upwards as well to be even (same plane.. plain ? eh, one of those lol) with each other if you're looking at it from behind.

I don't see why a shop couldn't make a similar setup using bullets. I notched my trans x-member as well for added clearance. If you want deep, you want bullets at the bumper w/very little outlet length.
This was the first attempt...



Was overly deep... bad enough on decel (like listening to bass 'music' with an uber loud car stereo.. hurt the ears), that I changed it to the one up above in the stock location.
The mustang-esque sound stayed the same (because of the duals) but, the extra piping on the outlet of the muffler brought the bass tone up a few octaves. More quiet than bullets, still to loud for my personal taste.

One the exhaust has enough speed (velocity ?) to overcome the perforated core.. it's just flat out loud and it's not a 'my exhaust just fell off' loud either. But, what sounds good is very objectionable as we all have different tastes in what sound good.

well i found a couple "good" sound clips of bullets, and they sound good when done right on like a 4th gen(seems like those guys do a good job on exhaust) and it sounded damn good. so I'm gonna look into it, see what the exhaust shop can do. If he thinks he can pull it off, i might just stick with the spintech's, but if he can't, no biggie, i'll just get some bullets...what are they 40 bucks a crack. I can almost sell 1 of my mufflers and get 2 of them. So we'll see what he wants to do

did you have to modify your panhard bar or anything like that? i also took out a little lip on the trans crossmember for added clearance...that was good for almost an inch to tell ya the truth..

The exhaust is pretty close to the torque arm if the tires are not touching the ground (less than 1/8") but, there is not contact. Panhard.. didn't have to touch it.
I was a little uncomfortable with the mount that holds the rear brake line to the chassis (chassis to rear dist block on the axle) so I made a small tab to move the rubber line a little further away from the tube. Probably not needed but, it was peace of mind for me.
The x-member mod I did was a little more than cutting the lip but, I wanted max ground clearance so, I went a little absurd..

Pypes Exhaust makes a muffler you might be interested in.

It's set up to replace the transverse 67-81 muffler, and is essentially two, straight through mufflers in one case.

I have one go to on my 71. It has 2.5" inlet/outlets, the interior pipe is more like 3" with little crimp like things pushed into the pipe to expose the exhaust to the sound damping material. It's supposed to be quieter than the flowmaster system made for these vehicles, and flow just like a straight through pipe.

it is not, however, a flowmaster-sounding system so if you want deep bass like sound, this isn't the muffler for you.

then scroll halfway down till you find the RacePro section

Then look for part number MVR100 in the racepro section and click on the part number.

They actually have an entire system for the 67-81 camaros which includes this muffler, but that's not very relevant on the thirdgen board.

I haven't heard one yet. It's going on my 71 with a 406 and a healthy cam (240/248 @ 0.050) so it's not going to sound much like a mild 305/350, plus the car has no cats and is going to use a very nice X-pipe crossover.

It probably sounds more like a dynomax or magnaflow because it's an open pipe design with sound absorbing material. it's definitely not going to be like a flowmaster since it has no chambers etc.

Has anyone tryed or measured to see if the could run the pipes through the space beween the tranny tail, crossmember, and tunnel? basicly the same way deadbird did it but with the pipes above the cross member. maybe relocate the tq arm not sure how much room is there, havent been under mine in over a year. Of course you would have to wrap, coat, that section since its soo close to the speed sensor (driver side)

The angle of that picture makes it look like there is a mile of space there but, it is very tight. Automatic trans would be even less. I had though ot that when I stated on my setup.. you can see where I ened up with the space limitation. You could probably build the crossmember the other direction and run the pipes over it but, I didn't see my 2½" pipe running there comfortably with the stock crossmember.
I also didn't like the idea of the pipe being that close to the floor. These cars are hot enough in summer months w/o heating up the floorpan as well, imo.
I'm not ultimately fond of the pipe being on top of the brake fuyel line either but, it's not close enough to cause a problem as far as I can tell.

ya, I just thought MAYBE there would be some room in there, when I installed my T56 I had to fab up my own cross member and it looks AWESOME and I realy dont want to cut it up if i dont have to. With enough wrap back there and if you got those pipes coated I dont think you would have to much problems with heat. I guess Ill just have to get under there and if I need to cut and hack I much start fresh and sell my crossmember.... thanks for the info! - TOT
