My formula has a 305 in it which isn't too big of a V8, but I wanted it to at least sound good. Me and my buddies replaced almost the whole exhaust system the other night in a 6 hour span; we took the cat and muffler off. We replaced the cat with a straight section of pipe and put the glass pack on the straight section that's under the driveshaft. Also replaced some rusty sections blah blah blah. What I'm gettin at here is that we started it with the muffler off, noticable throttle response gain and better sound, then we started it when we took the cat off. If only it were legal to drive around with straight pipes! The throttle response seemed to be ten fold and the sound was incredible! Now I'm sure it's horrible for the environment and your fuel mileage, but if you're like me you won't care. I don't regret taking the cat off and no problems with engine management so far.

Probably not a good idea to post this on a forum- if anyone actually cared to do something its a large fine to remove your cats. It pollutes and makes your car smell nasty. Removing a cat alone will free up a negligible amount of HP, not really worth the hassle of having to screw around with it during emissions testing IMO.

You can gut it yourself if you really want to. If it's clogged you might want to do that or consider replacing it.

Pros:
- Better sound
- Better power over a clogged cat - however not much difference (1-2 hp) compared to a new cat.

Cons:
- Carbon buildup on your back bumper
- Louder
- Peculiar smell (Have to be a real gearhead to love this)

I took the cat out on my LT1. I'll take it out on my next thirdgen.

Good: You have removed the clogged cat from your exhaust system, making your engine more efficient again. It doesnt have to try to push exhaust thru a tiny hole anymore.

Bad: You are now guilty of a crime. You have given hot rodders a bad name in the eyes of the public. You have told lawmakers that the current $10,000 fine for tampering with your emissions equipment isnt high enough to stop you from doing it, so they will raise it. You are polluting the air. People will think you are a hick, hillbilly, or red-neck with a loud obnoxious car. Your girlfriend's dad wont let you see her anymore. Acid rain will fall from the skies. Fish will grow three eyes. Reindeer will lose the ability to fly on Xmas Eve. Pumpkins wont grow in time for Halloween. The ball in Time Square will get stuck and wont drop on New Years. You will step on a crack and break your mother's back.

Dont remove your cat and not replace it. Its there for a reason.

Ditch the cat like a red headed stepchild.

Only if you live in smog free zones with no emission test and only if you can't afford a high dollar fancy hi flow one.

Guess my beef is I live near 2 oil refineries, 1 coal power plant, 1 nuke power plant and 1 super nasty bad waste dump. I'm not gonna worry about the bit of crap my car puts out.

F the EPA and plant a tree. Probably all gonna go away in 2029 when that asteroid comes so close to earth, it will pass under our satellites. Igniting the upper atmosphere and burning off all that bad junk

Though its is really gonna pass that close in 2029, just no one knows what will happen for sure.

You are not going to see huge gains by deleting the converter (compared to a new hi-flow). If you have an exhaust on the car, it also might make it sound raspy.

Up here where it's not illegal, it's pretty common. A straight pipe is a lot cheaper then a new cat. I've done it for my last car, and will on this car pretty soon.

Makes it raspier, and smells different. Best comparison is a boat. I consider both of those to be a perk.
Power upgrade is there too. Win win to me.

Ever see a diesel drive by? How about all those long haul truckers? And the smoke outta those? Then try and tell me I'M affecting the environment with my puny well tuned V-8, driving a whopping 20,000kms a year, because I chopped my cat? Right. If it were a law, (like to you guys), i'd reconsider, but for me, it's an easy choice.

You can buy a universal high flow cat for under $50. A weak 305 will sound like poo without a cat. It will pop and leave you with interior drone and rasp.

Doesn't take much to beat a honda since they are economy cars. It makes me mad when people in performance cars go around smoking cars designed for a low price and good gas mileage. And I guarantee if you race a performance Honda you'll lose, I had a 305, they aren't fast- even without the cat.

Not to butt in but I feel that if somebody tries to race you in a Honda they deserve to lose hardcore. Some people with Hondas fail to realize that they are economy cars, I have a civic and I know it's slow. I just bought an exhaust cut out for my firebird and I love the way it sounds when it's open!! I think it sounds like a boat too. Just watch out for the law...
