Straight pipe sound good or bad?

I was looking at my brother-inlaws lifted silverado (with a 350) the otherday and he had a sraight pipe. he started it up for me and it sounded sweet. i have a 305 in my camaro and i was wondering if i got a straight pipe(2.25"-2.5") fome the converter back, that would it sound good or will it be too loud and would it give me some extra horses since i'm keeping the stock exhaust maifold?????

If your engine is anything even remotely close to stock - don't. It may or may not give you a few horsepower, but its not worth it. It will sound like crap. Stock cam, iron manifolds, not much power... they all sound like crap with open pipes. It will sound like one of those hillbilly '70s trucks you see running around town. You know, the ones that are all falling apart from the rust and lack of maintenance? Actually, it would sound worse, since those usually had 350s, and you have a 305.

Now, if your car had a performance cam in it, a set of headers, high compression, etc etc... then it might sound pretty cool. But anything close to stock, will not. It will sound quite bad, even you will agree.

Get a good aftermarket 3" catback, like those from Hooker, SLP, Blowmaster, Borla, etc etc... and your car will feel much more powerful, and it will sound alot better as well.

If you don't want to spend the money on a catback, a change of muffler would give you an increase in sound.

Totally agree, straigh pipe from the cat is loud, but horrible sound quality. It just sounds like your muffler fell off and you can't afford to replace it Don't confuse loud with good or with more power. On your stock car, you can only get so much more power through removing or replacing the muffer, then other bottlenecks are the limiting factor, and you're just making a lot of noise with a slow car.

Try going to Pypes.com, they sell a reasonably priced muffler that you can fit right onto you existing system that will sound decent. Take advantage of us old guys, we did exactly what you are doing 20 years ago, and learned from it.

"straight pipes" on ANYTHING sounds horrible... If you want loud add horsepower don't subtract exhaust.

i had my catback on for a few weeks and still clamped on with clamps from the kit.

well one day the rear clamp got lose and the whole system fell off! so i unbolted it and put it in my trunk and drove home. all there was was stock manifolds, y pipe and cat.

at idle it wasnt much louder than my flowmaster.. but under any rpm load, it got realllly loud. it sounded somewhat aight but i wouldnt recommend it. the tone wasnt really good. i revved it to 4500rpms and it was brutally loud tho. sounded somewhat alright but i would want some kind of straight thru piece like a bullet or chambered tube muffler to help tone the sound

but what i did notice... the car chirped hard on the 1-2 shift after the flowmaster fell off.. with the flowmaster it never did chirp. and didnt have a shift kit at this time

When I looked at the picture you posted I thought for a moment you were going to put that truck exhaust your car and I was going to tell you it would NOT fit. But I see you are going with the Flowmaster catback system, which will bolt up.

take $100 and buy a flowmaster muffler. Best sound you can get for little money. I had straight pipe with headers for about 2 weeks and got pissed and went with the american thunder. If your goin catback, I would go loud mouth though.
