current 3 1/2 exhaust tips, what if switch to 4" ?
Car: 1992 Camaro Z28
Engine: Stock L98 5.7L V8 350 TPI (K&N's)
Exhaust: Stock dual cat, 80 series muffler ending with dual 3 1/2 diam. 24" long (2 feet) chrome tips.
NOW..
If I were to switch and get 4" diam. 22" long chrome tips on the exact same car (just changing the tips). Would the exhaust tone change AT ALL?
Deeper? Throatier? (is that a word?
). LOSS of power?

My 5.0 GTA has a 3.5" tip, my 5.7 car has a 4". The 4" is deeper sounding and quieter than the 3.5". I actually ran the car with just the 3" steel pipe for a while before putting the 4" tip on it. The change in tone was dramatic. I'd stick with the 3.5"s.

They will give a slightly deeper tone to your exhaust.
My 4" tips don't look ridiculous, they actually look pretty fuggin' mean.

I had 4" tips on my 91 B4C with the same motor configuration you have. 4" tips look really nice under the bumper and I would highly recommend them.
The exhaust had a more agressive tone with my dual out flowmaster. You will not be disappointed with how it sounds.

I had my end at the lower lip of the bumper. You could tell they were under there, but you had to actually look to see them. They did not extend out at all.

The 4" tip is a much deeper sound and a bit quieter than a smaller outlet. My 5.0 car had a steel turndown, then I put a 3.5" tip on it. The volume didn't change any but it has a bit more resonation to it and sounds great. My 5.7 car has the same exhaust setup on it as the 5.0 car but the tips are different between the 2 cars. The 5.7 car I went from a steel 3" pipe just poking out at the bumper to a 4" chrome tip and the change in tone on that car was dramatic. It went from a gnarly aggressive raspy tone to a deeper quieter tone. I think going with the larger tip gives the tone a chance to dissipate a bit before exiting instead of just dumping out pretty much the same as it left the muffler with a smaller diameter pipe or tip. All I know is when I got back into the car after getting the tip installed I had mixed emotions. I sure looked better than the steel pipe but the sound wasn't as good. Oh well, Im putting a one chamber on there in the next day or so, so Im not that worried. I'll get the volume and rasp I want back.

I have 3.5" tips and they do really help the tone of the exhaust. I have some rectangular stainless 4th gen style tips but have been hesitant to put them on because I know they will probably dramatically change the exhaust sound.
