OK...I hope this is simple. My current '84 TA, L69, manual trans. "G" VIN code, exhaust system is original, but 22 years old and needs total replacement from and including the Y tube to the exhaust tips...cost not a primary concern (would like to avoid gold plated). Can anyone recommend a system and/or kit that includes Y tube, catconvert, and all the rest?...and also I would like a little more aggressive sound than stock.

I assume it's best to look for mandrel bent tubs and stainless (I don't want plain mild steel).

Thanks...

checkout summit's site, flowmaster has a nice american thunder series catback, aluminized steel, and they make direct fit high flow converters, and they also have different y-pipes listed.

headmann headers, get their matching y-pipe, then purchase a high flow cat from summit racing and whatever catback exhaust in 3" of your choice. the catbacks for the single cat "TPI" cars will be the 3" exhaust and definately what you'd want. the other catbacks may only be 2.5" and would be a waste of money.

'84 exhaust
I don't want to get into a header project so I'm staying with my original exhaust manifolds...the headmann header option won't work. But I did check the Flowmaster website and didn't see an exhaust system kit for an '84 Firebird/Camaro...I would prefer a kit rather than separate parts that won't necessarily fit well. Any further help?

Thanks...

Flowmaster doesn't make the American Thunder series, Hooker does.

There is a 3" version for L69 (4-bolt cat), or at least recently was, I know because I put one on my car a year or 2 ago. I believe that it's this one here. I used this cat right here with it. I think the "tips" that come in that system look r¡cer stupid; so I used some Edelbrock stainless steel turn-downs, and cut the tailpipes and to length and all to make the turn-downs tuck up behind the bumper like they're supposed to and look exactly like the stock ones, instead of drooping down and looking like a spaceship landed next to it and hung these non-fitting warts from planet Honda underneath it.

You sure about that Sofa? The Hooker system I have is a "Hooker Aerochamber" cat back, not American Thunder.

Anyway, I went with the Hooker Aerochamber catback for the '83-85 L69 cars. It has the 4-bolt cat flange, 3" I pipe, and dual 2.5" tail pipes. It sounds really nice without being abnoxiously loud.

The pipes are of aluminized steel, so they won't corrode, but don't cost anywhere near what stainless steel costs. The muffler is just painted flat black, but its built beefy enough that corrosion won't be an issue anyway. It breathes very well. Out at the track, there is no gain in ET or MPH by opening up the cutout I have. I breathes very well, even on a stout 350 like mine.

I'd say go with the Hooker catback, I have no regrets at all about mine. The Y-pipe though... I'm not sure anyone makes a 'new' Y-pipe that bolts up to factory exhaust manifolds. You'll probably have to have one custom made. Use 2.5" pipes off the mjanifolds into a 3" collector. Should breathe well and sound really nice.

I don't know, maybe not; maybe I'm confused. Wouldn't be the first time!!

I have the Hooker one in any case, whatever its name is; fits great, works good, only complaint I have is it's louder than I would wish. But I'm learning to live with it.

'84 exhaust
Y tube?...I see Walker makes a "Y" tube (#40445) for an '84...about $160...is this a possibility or a waste of time?

Thanks...

That y pipe "will" fit....but it is smaller tubbing and crush bent, not manderal.
