Exhaust Systems

I was just wondering if anybody could give me any idea of what exhaust system would be the best for my 86 Z/28 Iroc-Z 305 4bbl (vin#H). If you have a specific brand and model of exhaust that you know is good then please comment back.

Do a search, this topic is covered millions of times.

Essentially, any aftermarket exhaust will open up the flow of your car. It's mainly personal preference.

Millions! Thats an understatement. It's more like a billion. But exhaust choice is all about what you prefer. I would reccomend going with a set of good headers though with your exhaust system. Exhaust manifolds are very restrictive.

That's an understatement. It's more like...what the heck comes after billions?

Ah, here's what I did; it's a direct fit system: Hooker 2055's (Jeg's 520-2055). Catco high-flow converter (Summit CTO-9118). Hooker catback (Summit HOK-16823HKR).

Very nice and it'll fit any future upgrades.

Since the subject is open. I have a 87 305 with a dynomax cat back. Would I get additional HP by replacing the power restricting Y pipe, or would it be better to go with headers. Also would headers and hi flow cat be better or do I need back pressure to run good. (as I have been told)

Yes, more power. I assume you have an LG4. Restrictive Y-pipe? You bet. Check this link:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...tion-ypipe.jpg

The LG4 Y is on the left, the L69 on the right. No power to be made with that dinky pos. Headers to include a Y-pipe, high-flow cat, and catback is the way to go. The system I mention above is a 3-inch system from the collector to the muffler.

The original TBI exhaust system is just as pathetic as the LG4 system. I upgraded to a full 3" y-pipe and catback system, and it made a HUGE difference in both sound and power! I went with the Edelbrock RPM catback system and have been quite happy with it, but I think even more members have used the Hooker catback system and are equally happy with that one as well. Headers sweeten it even more. Whatever the case, make sure to choose a 3" catback with mandrel-bent pipes whichever system you choose. Stay away from Dynomax or Flowtech since they're only 2 1/2" systems.

or you could be a yuppie and buy slp trash like i did. Im sure there great headers but they leak bad i have to tighten the y-pipe every week i dont kno what the problem is and where the cat goes into the pipe is hard to seal too. I wish i would have gone with all hooker catback and headers. The slp catback is quite and looks like **** too

I really like my 4in mufflex system with flowmaster muffler its plenty loud sounds good and is yet still quiet enough to drive around normally and I'll never need a bigger exhaust again
