removing a cat illegal?

can some one help me out here.
im trying to figure out how to find out what your states regulations are on emmisons. i went to the dmv website but it didnt say nothing about haveing to have a cat converter. i live in ny and my car is an 87 camaro and it does not need to pass an emmisions test. because im in the process of putting my new exhaust on, headers with 3" sriaght pipes all the way back no mufflers or cats. obviously it will be extremly loud but it nots a daily driver, so i just wanted to know what would happen if i drove with out a cat.
any info would be really helpful thanks.

Lets say you have a 200,000mi L03, you rebuild it, put it back in, hook up the stock exhaust.. The Improvement wont be all that Great.. because that Cat is plugged... removal of the cat will help alot, with HP and MPG..

I dont know why you'd remove it, Just put dual cats or a larger cat on it..
