Electronic Cut out setup?

I'm running stock headers and a Flowmaster 3 inch exhaust on my 1991 GTA.

I'm also very interested in getting an electronic cut out for my car since I need to pass emissions in my state. I want a set up I can reuse when I upgrade to performance headers.

Who makes quality (and preferably rustproof) electronic cut outs? Is there enough room to mount the cut out between the headers and the dual cats?

Also, I was hoping I could have a set up where I can quickly swap the cats out for a straight pipe. However, this may be overkill with the cut out. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Bill

It would indeed be overkill to have a cutout before the cats and then swap them out for a straightpipe. And it's probably not going to fit on the ypipe before the cats.. Unless you get it custom welded. And if you have a cutout before the cats, it should be an automatic fail. Usually people get flanges welded up to the pipe with the cutout on it, and then they bolt that in where the cat goes.

I have a mccord powerplate and it's served me well for years and years and years. And, uh, it's aluminum, so... No rust.

is the mccord powerplate electric? where did you purchase it?

What is an automatic fail cut out?

What if..... I had the flanges welded to the cats, so that they were removeable. Then, I replace the cats with a piece of 3 inch straight pipe (maybe this needs to be smaller? ) and put the cut out on the piece of straight pipe (with flanges).

How tight is the seal with flanges? I dont want any soot forming under my car. Also, would I need to run an exhaust pipe from the cut out to the right or left side of the car to avoid soot?

I checked summit for electronic cut outs and they are EXPESNIVE. I found these tho.

http://shop.quicktimeperformance.com...ct_detail&p=25

I don't know if they are any good or not.

An automatic fail cut out? lol, i meant that an exhaust cutout is illegal if you put it before the cats. So you would fail emissions automatically.

Yes, that's exactly what I was saying.

How tight is the seal? what do you mean? there wont be any soot forming under your car. and you wont need to run a dump from the cutout. Though you could put a header turndown on it if you wanted.

Those qtp cutouts are ok, or so I hear. Why don't you give the search button a try.

Oh and I got mine from the website. mccordcg.com/mpp2 or something. just google mccord powerplate.

305q_ta86,

Thanks for your help. I've been searching for the past hour or so, and really haven't had any luck with the cutouts.

In nj, they dont check under the car. (At least not yet!) So, I wouldn't have a problem passing there. Although, I do like the idea of making the cut out removable instead

Are you sure I won't get soot in my car from the exhaust? Sorry... I'm just VERY ****.

What size pipe will I need in place of the cats? 3 inch? 2.5 inch -> 3inch? This will also determine the size of the cut out.

I checked out Mccord. The website is:

http://www.mccordcg.com/mpp/order.htm

The price is comparable to QTP (considering the cut out y pipe isn't included). Which Y pipe do you recommend?

Any other manufacturers of cut-outs?

Finally, where can I purchase weld-in flanges and grommets for them (or V clamps), a section of straight pipe, and a turn down tip?

Thanks again,
Bill

Well I got my cut out y pipe from summitracing.com. You can also pick up random exhaust parts from them, or just go down to an exhaust shop or a NAPA. As for the pipe you'll need to replace your cats, I don't know. 2.5" I think. Maybe someone else will chime in on that one.

As for soot, no I really dont think it'd be a problem. I've had mine for years and it's just fine.

I don't know what other manufacturers are out there, but I think Mccord and QTP are still the big 2.

Hmm... Mccord vs QTP... which to choose?

What kind of HP/Torque gains will I see with this mod over my dual cats with flowmaster exhaust?

Wow, that is a bit retentive for a cut out.

Im not sure exactly how your exhaust is set up, but this is what I did, which ended up costing very little. I have the edelbrock TES headers and 3" y pipe, which once upon a time turned toward the stock placement of the cat. I cut a hole in the y pipe where the outside of the bend was, angle cut and notched a 8" piece of 3" pipe, and welded it on so it was strait in line with the y pipe. With this set up, you could still retain the stock cat and exhaust and weld/bolt the butterfly valve of your choice onto the end of the dump. Or you could go the cheap way- flare the end of the dump and put a collector flange on there, then bolt a plate over it. The only time I really want my dump closed is when Im going into a city that has a noise ordnance, and with the dump being right behind the SFC, it is hidden but easily accessible.

DMH electric cut-outs. You just missed a group purchanse on Electric Cut-outs on turbotransam.com. I got my cut-out for 154 shipped. I have had two DMH cut-outs and they are alluminum and very nice no leaks. I have a single cat car so I cant help you with set-up, but goodluck and there is nothing like the sound of a cut-out.
