I have an '88 camaro on which I will likely be doing an LTX swap on. As far as exhaust goes, I want something a little quieter than what I hear from most of the aftermarket (read: borla, flowmaster Thunder, etc.), especially at idle. Any thoughts or suggestions?

 

The stock exhaust is probably the quietest you will get. But I'm sure a quick search will net you some others that may be quieter than most of the aftermarkets.

 

I'm not talking stock quiet. I mean aftermarket 3" catback system that has a decent sound. My engine will also be cammed, so ideally, the mufflers should hide the sound of that (otherwise it sounds cheap IMHO)

 

Dynomax.

 

I have the Flowmaster Force two and it's not very loud at idle. But when I rev it, it sounds pretty darn good for a 305 with some extra mods.

 

I second the Dynomax, I have one because I got it for cheap cause I work at NAPA. And that thing sounds stock at idle, but it opens up higher in the r's. But sittin at a light most people think its stock.

 

i hate aftermarket mufflers, they are all straight through garbage I.M.O
ive been "designing" a muffler of my own that has a pressure vavle that opens at about 3500 rpms or XXX CFM that way,,, super quiet with a little bit of torque boost at low rpms,,,, then pretty much to a cutout..

its my opininion but i hate driving by little children, old people, or FUNERALS and have the pipes just blaring when you dont even want them to.

if interested i drew up a crappy paint picture of how im gonna make it work. ill post it up if needed

 

that might actually be cool. Will you be selling the system itself or the schematics to build your own? Either way, what kind of price are you thinking about?

 

i will be selling them sometime soon, because i kinda want to start making custom exhausts, could/ will be made in stainless and regular steel powder coated black. the mufflers inlet would also be the side,, so it would be a 3 inch tall mufller overall, intead of the regular 3 1/4'' then the dump part would be about 2.75 (slight restriction for sound control) and the normal flow with the valve closed would be somewhere between 2.5 and 2.25 for more sound control at low rpms,,,

i can't upload my rendering (painting)
so ill make one at work as soon as i can get some 3 inch piping. and post it in the exhaust section, probably this or next weekend.

aftermarket mufflers are all about cheapness

look at the facts : Dynomaxx + straight through perforated tubing with fiberglass. Magnaflow- straight through perforated with fiberglass, Flowmaster- big hollow box with a couple plates of metal shaped like Vs (same as hooker) borla has one of the dumbest dual setups ive ever seen with the muffler only being used by one tailpipe and the other has a blockoff plate,,, (thus the flow isnt even out both pipes,,, its a pet peeve of mine) and im pretty sure borla is straigh through glass pack like the rest.

i think any car with a cam, and one of these aftermarket mufflers would be a dead givaway that the car has *****.

 

I thought the dead giveaway was the point of aftermarket exhaust...

I like the idea of that muffler you have though- for sleepers you need a system like that. I could care less about the children/church factor (if I drive by either, its on accident) but a cutout inside the muffler would make a universal install much easier. How are you going to work the dump valve, using a spring to keep it closed at low pressure? Post some pics when you can.

 

i m not saying that aftermarkets are a bad choice,, jsut bad for people that don't want the noise all the time ESPECIALLY on the highway (nothing worse than not being able to hear the tunes over the pipes on the highway,.

i thought about a spring, but it would be suseptable to corrosion and would stay shut (or weaken) over time.

this is one reason ill put an acsses door. Im pretty sure the "valve" would be held closed with multiple springs, or have it be a flexy flapper that bends or curves to open,,, not exactly sure have to deveop and test it.

 

Out of curiosity, how much do you plan on charging for a complete system? and what about blue prints to build your own?

 

Sounds like a neat idea, but I'll probably settle for Dynomax myself.


And what's wrong with the Borla's? Are they overrated in your opinion (I'm not sucking up to them, just wondering if their 800 dollar price tag is worth it).

 

borla has very nice craftsmanship (welds) its stainless, cool tips.. i just dont like the sound control and tailpipe setup

and for that price, ill buy a tubing bender and do it myself

 

 

i dunno, i hate giving hotrodding a bad rep with loud pipes/ no emmisions..... its going to make it illegal one day.
