Dual cat set up on a 1988 Iroc-Z 305 TPI
Hello All,
I wanted to know, since I live in Ca. and need cats, can I get the dual cat set up from the 1989 Iroc-Z to work on my car, I have read that the flow is alot better, I was running straight pipe which was nice but I do not want to get fined if I get stopped for not having cats. Please help, I hope that they do fit right in. I have 305 TPI engine, I will be getting some edelbroc headers soon and would like to add this piece in, cut the original cats and put in magnaflow high flow cats. Good idea or bad idea?

Better ideas:
1) Get Hooker 2055HKR headers instead of the TES.
2) Get a single direct-fit Magnaflow cat for '88 TPI instead of two cats for a different application.
You may "get away" with the dual cats, but there is no doubt about #'s 1 & 2 above, and the performance advantage with dual aftermarket cats vs. single aftermarket cat is nil until you do a lot of other aftermarket things to the engine.
Technically, in order to use the later year exhaust, you would have to convert all other emissions-related equipment to the later design - non-start-injector version TPI, ECM, etc.

Re: Dual cat set up on a 1988 Iroc-Z 305 TPI
Thanks,
I already have a magnaflow hi-flow cat, for smog reasons, b4 I was running straight pipe, after the cat I have 3" piping leading to the flowmaster muffler. Is there a company who makes 3" y-pipes that connect after the headers. I have the original piping after the manifolds. I will take your advice on getting the hooker headers. I wanted to know, why my car feels different now that I have the hi-flow cat, I used to love the way the car felt running straight pipe, I heard it has to do with back pressure. Will the car feel better after I install the headers and y-pipe to my exhaust.
thanks again for the suggestions.
