Looking to do away with all the smog pump and tubes on my 1988 gta 350 TPI.Any ideas on how and what not to do and best and easy way to do??thanks

 

you can crimp your airtubes to keep them from leaking, if you dont want it to look like crap you can remove them and replace them with brass cap fittings to fill the holes in the manifold, to get rid of the pump i guess you have a couple options, you can get a smog pump delete pulley.. or you can just remove it all together and, well im not sure how it works with vbelt, but with serpentine you can get a longer belt and reroute the way its ran and it will work fine, there is a tech article that you can get to from the main page of this site on how to do the serpentine belt

im pretty sure thats about it, oh and you will wanna make sure you figure out a way to keep the cat from leaking now, you can probably just crimp or plug that pipe somehow, the pipe that goes to the pump..

but i think thats about it..

 

The cat will not last anywhere near as long without the smog pump.If you are keeping your cat I would consider keeping the smog pump.

I know the ECU changes the O2 swing constants based on whether the air selector is commanded to "DIVERT", because the extra O2 in the exhaust will skew the O2 readings. I'm sure most people who hack off the air pump don't even know this is the case. You should get your chip changed to reflect the lack of air pump, to really do the job correctly. Yeah the car will still run if you don't.

Removing, tampering, disabling, or otherwise fiddling with your car's emissions control devices on a street vehicle is a violation of FEDERAL emissions laws, regardless of your state's emissions laws. If youre caught, you could face a $2500+ fine, and jail time.

The AIR system does not hurt horsepower. The only bad thing it does is make it difficult to change your spark plugs. However, if we in CA can make 350 RWHP, get 20+ miles per gallon, and pass CA smog with everything hooked up and working, so can you.
Dont give our car hobby a bad name. Removing your emissions controls just tells stupid lawmakers they need to make the laws and fines tougher to keep you from doing it. We all suffer that way.

 

Well,Kevin91Z thanks for the info,but Here in the GREAT state of TEXAS we like the clean look of not having all that crap on are cars.And as far as emmissions go there are plenty of others that have done this and passed emmissions test with flying colors!!!so I know they really bust yalls ***** over on the west coast (that has to suck!)but here in the GREAT state of TEXAS they dont as much.thanks anyway!and by the way I'll try my hardest not to give are hobby a bad name!!!

There are a few guys on here running a plugged air tubed cat and it still runs fine and they pass emissions over here in Ohio. So I agree with making my engine bay cleaner....and if I can pass emissions without them then WHY THE HELL DID THEY PUT THEM ON THE CAR. LMAO. Must REALLY suck to live in California...besides all the GREEN if you know what I mean....I mean shyt Cali basically says GREEN is legal lol. But smog isnt....I like the way they think. Humboldt L8er guys.

Actually you are wrong...anything your motor must turn such as a fan, alterator, (AIR PUMP), water pump ect ect is causing parasitic horse power loss! Why do you think people run underdrive pulleys? Oh I know its because they look better that those big stock pulleys

 

I removed mine to clean up the engine bay. Did not effect emissions one bit. I did reprogram it out of the ECM. I think one good coming out of Cali. is the fact that it takes their **** attitude to make people (Americans) take a half hearted look at anything. You basically have to beat Americans in the head to make them take notice of anything. And yes I'm a born in the USA, flag waving WASP and I love my country.

 

Most of the emission accessories on cars are to reduce nocive gasses when the engine is cold, once hot only the cat converter keeps making a big difference.

The water pump is the biggest cause of parasitic loss, not the air pump. People run underdrive pulleys to make the water pump turn slower to reduce its drag. Then you put a different alternator pulley on to keep it spinning fast to charge up the system. The air pump pulley doesnt get replaced. I have read over and over and I believe its been proven on a dyno that turning the air pump takes about 1 horsepower.
