can I substitute the 80 series muffler that comes in the exhaust kit for a super 44 muffler? Also would it be cheaper to buy your own piping and then buy the muffler by itself instead of buying a $600.00 kit?

That's a good question. The Super 44 isn't supposed to be mounted tranversely, so it may not sound very good. If you can cut and weld it yourself, go ahead and buy your own pipe. If not, you'd come out better bolting in a kit than having a shop weld up a custom exhaust.
I bought my pipes from another company and used an 80 series on my '83 Z28. Cost just over $200 for everything and surprising all the pipes fit the muffler perfect.

Why would a muffler care how it was mounted? It wouldn't. Flow in...flow out.

Yes, that's true, but not if you want dual pipes out the back. Then you have to go with a tranverse muffler.
I have the Flowmaster cat-back. I ditched the polished SS tips as I don't care for the custom scraping sound they make going in and out of parking lots. I installed mandrel bent turn-downs in their place leaving the system completely hidden much like the stock system was. It sounds good when I **** on it but is just loud enough when cruising. If you want your brains rattled around in your head and for all your neighbors to know when you come and go, this probably won't suit your needs.
Install was easy and fit is very nice once those big assed tips were ditched. I have seen a lot of muffler shop exhaust systems in f-bods, in fact the one I pulled out of my car the previous owner had installed at a proclaimed "performance exhaust shop". The Flowmaster kit fits as good as or better than the best of them and beats over 90% of them hands down. How many muffler shops use mandrel bent tube? I can’t say its worth close to $600 if you are only going to use the intermediate pipe though.
