First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
Well I finally got my set of long tubes in from Stainless Works after about a 3 month wait
part # 82921753
82-92 Small Block 1 3/4" primaries with 3" od slip joint collector. No air tube fittings
My goal was to find something that has really good ground clearance and support major HP and will work with my AFR Eliminator heads. So far I'am pretty impressed with the quallity of the wields and bends, they are a nice header and they should be since they cost a friggin fortune.
Probably in the winter I'll go ahead and install them and see if they truely are a bolt on, lol after that I'll get them coated if they do end up working with my t-56 tranny and I like the way they sit in the car for clearence and stuff.
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
last ones with gaskets for my AFR 195 Eliminators. BTW plug access is awesome with these straight plug heads and headers, should have no burnt plugs wires with these.

Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
check the fit now i got a set and the driver side collector would hit the frame and not let it seal to the head and both head flanges were very warped had to send them back also had to make a heat shilde for the fuel/brake lines on the driver lower frame by the collector and when i shut down the motor they hit the frame. I thought the same about the o2 as well to close
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
I just got my Hawk's thirdgen longtubes (made by Stainless Works) without the O2 bung, will weld my own on a little farther downstream. looks like great construction though. just waiting to get my engine back from the builder now.
*Edit* ok so I didn't look at the other header, it's got the O2 bung on it will have to plug it and weld another one on

Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
Hello,
I found this thread looking for info on the SS works LT headers with the 3" collector. What is everyone doing for a Y pipe? All custom? I have been contemplating getting these as I am looking for a LT header with the best ground clearance possible. Does anyone have any install pictures?
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
a few more pics.....
i actually bought the y pipe to it, but the spohn crossmember is gonna be dificult to bypass. it would have fit fine w/ the stock tranny crosmember, i believe.....
atleast i have ss pipe w/ bends that ill be able to cut up and modify

Thanks for the photos, those are great, the ground clearence looks fantastic.
yeah they a pretty close to the body,
if i remember correctly they could only make their custum y pipe for the 2 1/2 collector.
thats the one i got. it comes pre-bent to clear your STOCK tranny crossmemebr, however ive got the spohn one so i have to go another route.
the y pipe is 2 1/2 until they come together and merge a 3 inch pipe. all stainless steel
i think i have picture of it
here's my car w/ the stainless worrks (hawks) long tube header.

Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
yeah these headers are made only for hawks by stainless works. they dont even have them on the stainless works website. they're expensive, but definetly the best looking/ best fitting long tube header imo. the hooker long tubes were too low to the gound on my application and got roughed up a bit and i had to ding the hellouta the number 7 primary to fit my AFR's. these fit no problem.........
now if i could just figure out the Y.........
so if u want 3/4 primary and long tubes SW is tha way to go
on price ck out the website, i think they're a sponsor here and should have a banner somewhere

is your car lowered? because i was thinking of getting hookers. i dont want any ground clearance issues though...
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
check your motor mounts, if they are old and saggy, you might wann a replace them. i think thats why mine were so close to the ground.
also i had problem w/ the #7 primary. had to bash it in a bit to be able to get to the spark plug, but i think thats an AFR prblem by what ive read on this forum
and no my car is not lowered.........
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
well my motor mounts are new and my car is not lowered, so hopefully i dont have a clearance problem. i would like to get the stainless works headers, but i dont want spend $800 and $300 for the y pipe. CRAMOS78, on ur afr heads, are the spark plugs angled?
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
I have been thinking of custom tranny cross member boxed either up or down to get me by that with the passenger side coming across under the tranny tail shaft. I got sidelined with a pantry project for the wife so I haven't had a chance to get my measurements to see if I am dreaming or if it might work. Hopefully this weekend.
Been doing some research on oval exhaust pipe to help with the clearance issues too. That looks promising.

Your not the only one.
My driver side collector is about 1/8 inch off the fuel and brake lines. I wrapped the header but I dont think its enough as my fuel pump keeps shutting off after driving awhile.
Now I have to pull the header, cut a whole in the frame rail and run the lines inside the frame rail to keep them from getting so hot...
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
Here is a picture of my Y-Pipe w Hooker Super Comps 2210. I did hhave my #8 tube cut and re welded with a wider bend to prevent the wire burn.
Cost me $300.00 to have the Mendrel Pipe Bent Y-Pipe.
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
DTL504: WOW, your car looks fantastic. Thanks for the photos. Which brand of torque arm is that? Also not to be a pain in the A$$ but do you have any side shots showing ground clearance? I am curious to see how the exhaust pipe relates to the height of the frame rails.
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
I have a Milodon 7qt Oil Pan w/ no problems. The ground clearance is not that great, but I have a few 5"-6" to spare. Some curbs I can go straight over while others require me to take the ole 45* angle to prevent draging the cutouts. This is a Spohn Torque Arm. Here is a few side pictures.
Look up front this is a Milidon 7qt Oil Pan Part# MIL-30900
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
Has anyone else tried these headers? Any other fitment problems? I gotta say I think Im gonna go with these headers because it seems the hooker ones have a lot of fitment issues. With the y-pipe how close is it the the trans and crossmember? Is there enough room to modify the y - pipe to fit two dynatech bullet style cats? They are 4" round and 11.5" long.
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
I've got them in the shop, but I don't have the engine finished yet so I can't say how they fit in the car. from what I can tell, they should be a great fit. my only "complaint" is lack of O2 bung on the 2nd header
you might run into space issues trying to squeeze cats in there as well
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
I think it will be tight as well. I might just have to get a custom y pipe made. Mufflex is not that far from me so I would probably go there. Ive been looking at the pics that hawks has and the y pipe does tightly go around the trans pan and crossmember. I have a spohn driveshaft loop that bolts onto the trans crossmember and I dont think the y - pipe will clear that.

Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
That drive shaft loop is a beaut, but it is precisly where you want the exhaust to come across. Channeling the subframe seems to be one of the more extreme, but clean, approaches for pipe routing and ground clearence. I haven't worked up the courage to do that quite yet.
Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
i am currently putting new heads and headers on my car and i ended up buying the stainless works 1 3/4 headers with a 3" collector i should have some pics of the headers installed next week.

Re: First look at Stainless Works 1 3/4" long tube headers
I bought the exact same headers about 5 years ago and have them mocked up to my motor and will start the fab to making it dual with an h pipe 3” all the way back. I had issues with my driver side collector hitting the bell housing case on my T56 so had to swap to a hydraulic throw out conversion clutch setup from Ram clutches. And also had to remove the passenger side collector and will have to do the same for the driver side to point them closer to the transmission. They installed my OD bung on drivers side close to the primary’s also. I would’ve bought the full system if they even made one for the 3 “ collectors but they don’t so I bought a u weld it 3” kit from flow master and will spend a bit of time making it all fit. I also did a pan hard lowering bar to gain more room for the dual pipes over the passenger side of the rear end. I won’t say these headers are all that bad though. They clear the steering and front k member, starter and other stuff pretty well. I’ll post more later
