header question

Will putting a dimple in headers affect performance in any way? I was just wondering cause I was looking at some used ones and they have a dent in them to make fit by the previous owner, it doesnt look too bad but I was just curious if this will cause problems in performance.

Even if the "dimple" did make the header slightly restrictive, the flow will still be better than the stock manifold. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it--that said, without seeing the dimple.

Re: header question

Just FYI, I witnessed a dyno session where the engine owner insisted that the dimpled, beat up, rusty and abused dyno headers on the first set of pulls be replaced with an identical set of brand new, flawless shiny chrome headers. The engine lost 4 Horse power with the new headers and no other changes.

Unless the dimple visably closes off part of the tube, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: header question

oh another quick one, they are kind of rusty and I was going to hit them with some high temperature paint but ive heard that these types of paints dont really stand up like they say they do, would it even be worth it to paint them. i know its probably just a personal preference as far as looks go but i wasnt even going to bother with it if the paint wasnt going to be worth a damn.

Re: header question

If they are rusty, blast the rust off first. Unless, the rust will keep growing under the paint. You'd hafta do that, or use POR-15 to kill the rust first.

Re: header question

if the headers are rusty,I'd say just buy a new set.I personally don't think that painting them with engine paint is a good idea.I have ceramic coated headers on both of my cars and love them.cheap black painted headers are exactly what you get.that black paint will last a month if you drive the car often if that.If you want headers that will last and look good buy coated ones.Thats my 2 cents.

Re: header question

BUT, stripped headers can be sent off for ceramic coatings, & they are just as good as a brand new set.

Re: header question

yes Stephen they surely can, depends on how rusted they are though. My second vehicle(89gta)has hooker 2460's recently coated and were practically new when stripped. When you try to strip badly rusted headers you end up with a pile of rubbish.

Re: header question

Yeah...SURFACE rust can be taken care of. THROUGH rust can only be cut and replaced, or tossed out.
