New exhaust for the 385

Tomorrow I will be getting my catback on (really leaning towards Magnaflow but still considering Hooker Areochamber) Will post some sound clips

I'm guessing from your sig that you went with Magnaflow...unless you allready had one.

Re: New exhaust for the 385

well if it helps I went through four mufflers on my car in two years trying to get a sound I liked (not including the 'stock' muffler). First the guy at the shop said he'd install something I'd like, nope... some cheap-o "walker" brand muffler. Sounded like a red neck pick up truck.

Second he pulled that off and installed a dynomax muffler... pretty much sounded identical to me, the body of the muffler was shorter, and it was even louder then the last one. I left that shop and never returned.

Third I decided to replace all the work this goof-ball did and bought an entire flowmaster cat back. I actually liked it for the first while.. sounded more like a muscle car, still loud, but not in the same way. It was a droning sound that was always there. As time went by I installed headers, cam, heads, etc and greatly increased the airflow through the engine... this made me hate the flowmaster because it totally lost its inital sound and I would get a headache after driving it for a mere 10 minutes.

So a good friend told me about magnaflow. A quality stainless steel muffler stuffed with rockwool (very similar to fiberglass, but won't burn or blow out). Its a muffler you can see right through to the other side as though it is hollow, yet they sound tuned and it doesn't produce that droning sound.

So I tried it.. love it. I can actually talk to a passenger in a normal tone/voice and I can again hear my radio on volume 2 or 3. instead of 10. It sounds like a tuned hotrod with the very familiar old school hot rod sound and it is very loud behind the car, but very quiet inside the vehicle.

Magnaflow gets my vote.

Now with that being said a friend recently installed hooker headers, y pipe, and hooker aero-cat back and I got the chance to hear it idle and rev up a bit.. it sounds pretty darn good.. almost as good as magnaflow. However I have not ridden in the vehicle and I would think it would be loud in car.

Good luck on your decision.

i think ill have the guy install one and drive it a bit and then if i dont like it, put the other one in myself and sell whichever i dont like on here......i can get my $ back from either muffler

Got a Aerochamber on my truck now and it's very loud in the truck. But I'm going to see if I can't remedy this... I have long-tubes, dual 3" into single 3.5" y-pipe, then a Dynomax 3.5" bullet muffler, some pipe and then the muffler with a very short turn-down before the axle. I'm going to run a single 3.5" pipe out over the axle and have it exit behind the roll pan to see if it quiets it down inside. I think it's just the short dump that's killing me...

I've heard great things about Aerochambers and lack of resonance though.

Re: New exhaust for the 385

aerochamber sounds ok on the vids i've seen but i never heard it in person. magnaflow is the same way, its ok sounding from what i've seen online but never heard it in person
But magnaflow is more straight thru and should flow more. If you want the most flow possible, check out Ultraflo stuff from Dynomax. they sound pretty good from the vids i've heard. they are also straight thru like magnaflow.

i had an 80 series flow and i liked it for awhile but got bored..wasnt mean/loud enough so i went with a powerstick chambered tube in the I pipe. i like the sound now...especially after the gutted cat but i warn you its pretty loud. not as loud as a SLP loudmouth but close and with a different tone. once the muffler is hot from driving it sounds amazingly awesome. very aggressive and loud like i wanted.

Re: New exhaust for the 385

i have a magnaflow cat/3" catback/magnaflow muffler and it sounds pretty good. Theres no drone or anything, and it sounds pretty loud at WOT but its just low deep and refined at idle.

Re: New exhaust for the 385

yeah i tried using the two belts in the tech article and it keeps rubbing on the actual smog pump....i took the smog pump pulley out and it did that. so i said screw it, got the smog pulley to actually turn and dropped it off at the place earlier tonite.....once i get the black hole for money (aka fireturd) home ill get u guys a video clip......gotta figure out how to post it on this thread though....i was so excited to get the magnaflow and hear it....ah well whats another day?

believe me i know....i gotta yank the whole smog pump out anyways but i spent all day trying to get the right belt to work and it left me with bug bites and frustration....can i just run without a smog pulley or do i need the smog delete pulley there in its place?

Re: New exhaust for the 385

i'd just take the smog pump out... the belt shouldnt rub against it at all. stock for my car is 94.5 inches. i believe you need near 97 inches to work right as provided in the tech article. but it could vary

Re: New exhaust for the 385

sounds good

ya the magnaflow sounded alot quieter to me then flowmaster did, but its really the design of the muffler that makes the interior noise quieter. my magnaflow is just as loud if not louder then my old flowmaster outside of the car, especially when on the gas.
