With straight pipes u lose the backpressure, on my 87 with the 350 i put flowmaster 3inch from the hedmen headers back and where the cat converter used to be i put a electric y pip cut out so i can have straight pipes when im cruising but on the highway i get the backpressure and they sound great either open or closed just IMO

Thats not necessarily true. It is possible to run straight piped exhaust with enough backpressure to be plenty drivable.

There are a few things you need to consider. Does your state require emessions testing? If they do you will want to keep your cat convertor. Also, are you buying a catback, or paying an exhaust shop for a custom bent job? Finally, do you want the exhaust to dump before the axle under the car, or to come out the back like stock?

Also, these cars came stock with a single pipe from front to back. So to get true duals, you would need to get long-tube headers or splice into your stock y-pipe. True dual exhaust will also cots alot more to bend up.

With any exhaust, straight pipe will be loud and obnoxious. It will crackle, pop, and sound like nascar coming down the road. People will call you names like *******, or hick. But persoanlly I think it sounds sick.

With either option, the combination of bends and length of pipe will give you the backpressure you need.

If you want single exhaust, I would recommend getting 3" pipe from either before or after the cat, depending on if you keep it. Have them run that back over the axle, then y-pipe it into dual 2.25" or 2.5" pipes into some nice truck tips or something.

If you want true duals, I would have them cut the y pipe in 2 locations, right before the two pipes from the left and right banks meet at that "T" intersection. Then use no bigger than 2.5" pipes all the way back to whatever you want. This can be done, but is expensive and looses ground clearence.

Re: What kind of exhaust

should be fine. The glaspack will keep it quieter if you decide to keep that. if you run single 3" into dual 2.25 or even 2.5 with tips you should be fine. At least it will be free flowing. If worse comes to worse, and you loose alot of low end torque, you can always put a muffler in later.

My buddy had a 305 el camino with cheepo special longtube headers. Each header went into its own 2.5" pipe with a glasspack, they ran on either side of the tranny tunnel. after the glasspacks were turndowns, so there was only about 5' of pipe after each header. It was hella loud and mean sounding. And ran fine. Untill he cooked the tranny with neutral drops.

Re: What kind of exhaust

On my 92 camaro i just had the pipe after my cat made to 2.5 then i had that go to my flowmaster 80s series muffler to dual 3 inch exhaust. I think it sounds pretty good and a lot of people tell me it sounds good too im not quite sure how glass packs would sound on a 305.

A couple of things to consider: Loud becomes very annoying in a short time, especially if you enjoy conversation or listening to music. Also, perhaps purchasing an aggressive-sounding, direct-fit system (including a high-flow cat) with mandrel bends and OE type hangers would be cheaper/better than a jerry-rigged system.

Those are very valid points. However, some people prefer the type of convienence you get when you bring your car to a custom exhaust shop. Most shops could bend you a system using 3" pipe, a flowmaster 80, and some nice tips, for less than $400. If you were to buy the catback for $350, it would still cost $100 - $150 to have them install it. Also, with custom bent, it is usually a more solid system, because it's welded, and stuff like the tips will pe nice and centered. Also, this is even more convienent for people when sound is the main concern, not performance. Some people are happy with stock power levels, and just want to "get it loud".

As for how glasspacks sound on a 305, well it will sound the same as they will on a 350 (or very similar, they are both GenI SBC). Here are some videos I found with a quick search. They are not f-bodys but it doesent matter, they usually have that same type of thing with a short section of pipe then the glasspack. At least you will get the general idea.

This is probably the best example. It is true duals, no cats, and exits in the rear:
