Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

The thing that will make me decide between the mac and hooker headers will be the y-pipe. I swore that somebody told me that the 2055's came with a y-pipe that is full 3 inches, all the way from right after the collector to the cat. I know the mac goes from 2.5 to 3 at the cat end. Can anybody clear this up? Anybody have any opinions on them?

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

From the merger of the two downpipes all the way to the cat, that pipe(the collector) is exactly the same size for both systems. It's a full-length 3" pipe.

The MAC system has two 2 1/2" downpipes from the headers that merge together into that 3" collector. Whereas, the Hooker system (reads like it) has two 3" downpipes from the headers that merge together into that 3" collector.

But regardless of whether the sizes of the system's downpipes from the headers to their merger is the same or different, both system's pipes(collectors) are 3" all the way from that merger to the cat.

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

So does it make it better to just get the hookers because of the 3 inch downpipes?

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

I suspect that most people would say yes, Hooker is better.

Both systems have AIR. Hooker's configuration is very stock-like, and I think most people like that. But some people like MAC's simpler AIR tube design.

Both systems use 1 5/8" primaries. MAC's primaries merge into a 2 1/2" collector(like most header systems), hence the 2 1/2" downpipes to the "Y." But Hooker's primaries(again, if I read their specs correctly) merge into a 3" collector, hence the 3" downpipes to the "Y." Then, as I said in the other thread, from that "Y" merger, both systems have a full-length 3" pipe to the cat.

Given all that, both systems work very well, but Hooker might have a slight edge. And Hooker is definitely the most popular system, so if it wasn't excellent, so many people wouldn't use it.

There are a couple of stickies at the top of the Exhaust forum page. ^ I'm sure you could findout everything you ever wanted to know about both systems, as well as every other system available.

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

The Hookers are NOT 3" from the collectors down, they are 2 1/2" to 3" at the merge, the same as the others.
These would be better.

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

Thanks for clearing that up. I suspected that to be the case. But the info about them on Holley's website reads somewhat confusingly, like they're 3" at that point, which I thought had to be incorrect. That's why I kept saying things like, "if I read their info correctly."

And yes, the headers you posted, Don(your own ) would be better. One of these days...

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

that wierd because my buddies 2055's look huge at the downpipe, i was convinced they were 3 inch but i guess they are 2.5 . I thought my hedmans on my rs were 2.5 at the downpipe and they look small so they must be 2.25.

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

The worst part of those 2055's is, they use a 2 1/2" ball collector and squeeze it down to less than 2" where it meets the y-pipe. You have to cut it back to make it work right, otherwise it's no bigger than the stock manifold.

Re: Mac vs. Hooker Y-pipe

So in essence, the 2055's are not a whole lot better than stock??

If they weren't noticeably better than stock, most people wouldn't refer to them as the best shorties/ypipe setup available for third gens
