question about flowmaster mufflers

OK i have both an dual output 80 series and a "force II" 30 series single out
both mufflers were free but why doesn't the 80 series have the same sound as American thunder cat-backs? its barley any different then the force II muffler tone and sound wise

my fathers 89 iroc sounds much better with the American thunder cat-back

and a few other people that have the full cat back all sound better

my question is are some 80s just not the same ?
i put my dads muffler on mine to try and it sounded the same as it did on his car both mufflers look identical

did flowmaster use 2 different 80 series? there is no model number just the normal patent number :/
Ive been wondering about it for a week now i also heard flowmaster used to sell off "50 series mufflers" as 80s?
i know there supposed to be a bit more quite but this dual out has almost none of the "flowmaster tone"
really the force 2 has more "tone" just quiet

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

Well, I dont believe that they ship "different" 80 series mufflers with the catback kit, but I cant say for sure.

However, it is common knowledge that flowmaster mufflers break in. Ater time, they are supposed to become louder, and throatier. Not alot, but enough to notice.

Also, the catback comes with full 3" mandrel bent intermediate pipe, and also those really sick stainless slash-cut tips with the bend in them. Those will both affect sound alot.

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

There are two different versions of the 80 series, atleast the last time I checked there was.

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

i just wondered as i compared it to my dads 80 on that came as the full cat back both mufflers are identical in size and shape other then the cat back is 3inch in and dual 3 inch out where as the 80 i was give was 3inch in and dual 2-1/2 out when i got it i was so happy but then i put it on and was kinda depressed with the sound the guy that gave it to me said he never liked the sound and since you can never tell model numbers with out the box as flowmaster dosn'tt put the part numbers on the muffer only the patent number

i was looking in the flowmaster catolog it seems to be an 80 series i wonder if its defective its bearly any louder and lacks the tone of the 30series force 2 muffler i have
its identical to my fathers cat back one when i put his muffler on my car its the exact sound i wanted even when i put the free one ion his his is muffled and quite only at full throttle dose it have and tone
dare i say it sounds like the factory muffler then how a flowmaster should

when its cold out you can tell its flowing as exhaust is shot out of both tail pipes i suppose im gonna try and clean it out i wonder if its got something in it guy had it on a car that sat most of the year altest the past few years

Sad part is, "common knowledge" isn't the same thing as "fact".

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

So your saying they dont break in? I mean I know there is no packing to blow out or anything.

Its just that, I know a few people around here with them, and they do sound different after some time.

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

I love my flowmaster 80's and i dont have anything to support it but i too would say they broke it a little. It could be that im just making them sound better than they used to in my mind but ill swear that its louder now than it was a few years ago.

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

the breaking part is the mufflers steel walls filling with carbon it will give off more ehco all non fiberglass packed muffers have that effect .

the issue im haveing is it lacks the sound of other 80series mufflers
guy that gave it to me didnt buy the full cat back only the muffler.

he is upgradeing to a true dual setup
i was wondering if any one else had the same issues?

i know alot of these sound great
had heard about some people thinking they sounded like crap but then i was thinking maybe they got one like this
most flowmaster have a nice raspy/hollow growl "flowmaster tone" to them
this one lacks growl and only marginaly louder then a force II 30 series and dosnt have the "flowmaster tone" the hollow growl icall it.

today i put the old 30 single out back on and really i didnt notice a big differance when driving so something is just wrong with the 80 i got
my dads iroc with a american thunder catback sounds like my car with no muffler for sound at idle and full throttle but freeway driveing the iroc dosnt have as bad of drone its there just not annoying loud like mine is with no muffler.

id leave the muffler off if it didnt look stupid with the i pipe ending where it does and how annoying the sound is on the freeway.

CCook mine sounds nothing like that all the local guys i let them hear it but said something is wrong with my muffler its very muted to say the least has the same sound a stock muffler does with only a tick more growl really almost identical sound to the force 2 30 i got now

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

A dual 3" out vs a Dual 2.5" out will sound differently. But, the main thing is that these are two different cars... I'm just taking a wild stab here. Comparing two cars, they will sound different unless they have the same exact engine, headers, cat, piping and muffler.

Re: question about flowmaster mufflers

i put the cat back version on my car and it sounded exactly the same the iroc dose but with a bit more raspyness from my headers where as the iroc has stock manifolds but i put the "free 80series" on the iroc it sounds just as bad as it does on my car so i know its not the pipeing its got to be the muffler itself
both engines are 305 with tpi his iroc has the l98 cam and 081 heads its a 28k mile car
my Rs is a tbi engine with peanut cam and TPI on top along with TES headers

Hasn't changed in 7 years. Only thing that changes is how your ears perceive it.
