what do you think about glass packs

im going to be putting a dual exhaust on my 82 camaro with a 350(long tubes with glass packs and dump off somewhere before the rear axle). i was planning on just putting hedman glass packs on it. my question is what do you think about glass packs, is my car going to be ridiculously loud, is it going to have a deep sounding idle? ive never herd glass packs on a v8 only on the rice burners lol so i dont know what to expect
thanks,
john

Re: what do you think about glass packs

glass packs dont even flow that well compared to todays muffler its old technology its gonna sound like an old pickup, and yes its gonna be ****in loud if ur runnin long tubes and dumpin before the axel. yo look into "power sticks" theyre straight thru chambered mufflers and they sound great

Re: what do you think about glass packs

I think glasspacks are one of those sounds that, well a V8 with dual glasspacks is like one of the defining sounds of our automotive heratige.

Unfortunately, many others believe that they are one of those things that should have been left in the 70's and 80's along with denim coats, mul-let haircuts, and billy beer.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Personally glass packs sound decent on an old farm truck but I can't stand loud exhaust that pops. The best sounding exhaust in my opinion is a dual exhaust setup with X pipe and flowmasters or spintech.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

i'd say go for it but get Thrush glasspacks- i have one on my car and it sounds great. Thrush glasspacks have smooth openings on the inside casing as opposed to other brands which have little notches sticking up to "catch" the exhaust causing turbulence and a not-so-good sound. my car has a glasspack and i have an LG4 and it def. does NOT sound like a truck or some red neck POS.

I disagree with this statement. If you look at most forms of motorsports that require mufflers, from Drag Racing to Motocross to road racing, all of them use some form of fiber packing around a perforated core. The "Power sticks' are just glass packs without the fiber packing, and used closed chambers outside the core to reflect the sound waves, and were originally availabe on Camaros in the '60's, so they are anything but "new technology". The problem with any "chambered" muffler is that they will only muffle well at a particular wave frequency, so they are quiet at some RPMs and very loud at others, and most I have seen on the dyno did not produce good power, just noise.

The biggest issue with "glass packs" as sold by a neighborhood muffler shop is that they use low quality packing that burns out, and not much of it. You'll find that a longer glass pack actually sounds good (somewhere around 18-20 inches long) and flows well until the glass burns out, then it just becomes a turbulence factory. They are also often limited by the internal diameter. Look up DynoMax Race Bullet # 24219, 3 inches straight through, 18 inches long. They're about 50 bucks from Summit, and gave us the best results on the dyno and at the strip. Not too bad at idle and low speed, and sounds like a NASCAR stocker at full honk.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

liteumup387 bro check it out i have basicly your setup except i have flowtechs headers and short glasspacs sounds pretty damn good two me better than the 18" i like it cause it sounds alot like the old camars and birds of the 60s 70s and goes swell with my crager ss,S, i have duels down mine and short glasspacs have great ground clearance also if your going true duels. i have seen glasspacs come straight off your headers and that sh*t is really loud, however i dont think it would work on our thirdgens.

Uh, to each his own. Maybe it would be a good idea when talking about exhaust to state your age and what you want from the exhaust.

I'm 47 years old, and I want to make the most power with the LEAST possible noise. I'm feeling like I'm in the minority here.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Glass packs are loud, but not good loud. They will make a V8 sound like a combination between a gang of harleys, and a construction dump truck. I have run them on several V8 dual exhaust setups and a few single exhaust V6 stuff so I am well versed.

TA you are not alone. I am 24 and I have had my share of open header $500 POS cars that went slow and made a ton of noise doing it. I am over that phase and now seek to make maximum HP with minimal noise. Most of the loud cars on the street are really slow lame-o V8s (and 4 bangers for that matter) that some kid just wants to make a racket with anyway.

If you want to hear glass pack sound clips, here is my brother's 66 Dart, which was a 318 w/ Magnum heads (1.96/1.6 valves), 0.470" gross lift cam, stock manifolds, and dual 24" long case cherry bomb brand glass packs

There are two video clips so you can hear it. It doesn't sound "that" bad but it is extremely flappy. Going down the street it would go blapblapblapblap, more like a motorcycle gang than a high performance car.

Here's two more video clips w/ sound from inside the car:

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Those are very long glass packs, but what diameter core are they? Are they true duals? Does it have an X-pipe? Inquiring minds want to know, so they can AVOID making anything sound like that.

Sorry, but Cherry Bombs are just a marketing name somebody slapped onto garden variety glass packs about 40 years ago to make 'em "cool".

Travis, you say yours are stainless, who makes them? How long are they? Any chance of a sound clip? C'mon, you "young bucks" are all computer savvy, right??? If my nephew can download music onto my cell phone, you can certainly download a sound clip fer yer buddies on this board!

Dual 2.25, 2.25" core, no cross over. Most glass packs are going to sound like this no matter what. With a small case (compared to an oval muffler) and packing, it's going to flap.

That 318 would have destroyed most 305 cars. That car weighed about 3,000 lbs. I have built more than just chevy stuff and it ran very hard. We don't have the car anymore. It was a total rust bucket. I have run glass packs on a Pontiac 400 w/ headers and it sounded even worse than that Dart did in the vids. Flapalapalapalapa.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Yes, sound is subjective to a certain extent, but most of us agree that the lowrider flappa flappa is not high performance sounding at all. When it comes to impressing the ladies, most of them cannot tell a Camaro from a Mustang from an dump truck, they just act impressed because they think it's important to you. All they care is if it runs well, looks decent, and doesn't stink.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Glasspacks sound best on a smaller displacement high compression carb'd V8...basically, if you have a ford 289 or a chevy 327 with a four barrel, then glasspacks are good, on more modern fuel injected engines (especially with the long induction tubes on TPI cars) then you're better off going with a chambered design.

naw i cant really agree with that....i think flowmaster is the better way out for any setup, however when you cant afford flowmaster spintech or w/e glass packs can hit the G spot, for now anyway

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Glass packs with dumps under the car are a nitemare. The interior turns into a vibration chamber. You need pipes that go out the back. They help the car sound so much better. Don't believe me? Disconnect the exhaust at the back of the cat and go for a ride. The glass packs came out in the late 60s when everybody wanted their car to sound like a musclecar. But with a low compression V8 and mild cam they just sounded like you had a blown muffler.

Ain't nuthin' like a high compression, big cam, carbed V8!

i've got a set of hooker shorty's along with their y pipe. i was thinking of sticking a single super 40 or something similar under the passebger seat and dumping soon there after, is that going to sound signifigantly different than the 80 series crossflow muffler i've got in the stock location?

You're also going to wind up with carbon monoxide in the passenger's compartment because the weather seals are never perfect, and you will be putting exhaust right under the pass compartment. I've dumped under the car once before. Never again.

i was thinking of running a short pipe and pointing it sideways in front of the weel under the rocker panel.

That is really what it boils down to. A 305 carb/tpi/tbi with a stock 0.350" roller cam is going to sound like a dump truck no matter what muffler you put on it. The cam is barely opening the valves, so that's the sound you get. I have a 3" exhaust and a Hooker aero chamber on a 305 TPI long block and it sounds like an oldsmobile with a stock exhaust. I have a roller cammed 327 w/ aftermarket heads and headers, and it sounds wild no matter what mufflers are on it.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with 327_TPI_77_Maro's statement. Mufflers are not magic, they only 'shape" the sound that the engine puts out.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

ive got dual glasspacks on my 3/4 ton silverado with a 350. they sounded ok until the glass burnt out now it sounds like a bag of popcorn in a microwave. it still sounds good at idle and normal (speed limit) driving, but when i get it to WOT it screams on acceleration and it pops on deceleration. IMO just put some thrush welded chamber mufflers on it. i have them on my camaro and they soud good no matte rwhat im doin. there just flowmaster knock-offs.

Re: what do you think about glass packs

ack in December, I replaced the original exhaust on my boss's 89 TBI 305 Formula.
I installed the Walker Dynomax Super-Turbo Cat Back. The system went on in 10 minutes and the car sounds great. Sorta deep sounding at idle and it will talk to you but it is not cop-baiting loud.

I got it from Summit Racing- Check it out : WLK-17493

Re: what do you think about glass packs

Thrush Magnum mufflers are made by Dynomax, very cheap, flow well, and have a deep but mellow sound.

Only one tiny warning, the 2 1/4 inlet/outlet version (stock exhaust piping on most of our cars) has an inner tube of 2 inches, while all other Thrush Magnum mufflers have inner tube of same size as inlet/outlet.
