Chambered
I was wondering if there were any benefits to having chambered mufflers... Currently i have a flowmaster 3" exhaust from cat-back. and it sounds great but its just not loud enough. i still am looking for a set of headers. i know that will help. but i want loud... any suggestions?

Re: Chambered
A flowmaster is a chambered muffler....
But if you want loud, I heard that Dynomax is the way to go.

Re: Chambered
I think he was referring to a powerstick chambered muffler. Which is a VAST improvement over a FLOWCRAPPER anyday. These flow VERY close to straight pipe numbers and sound incredible. Nice rumble at idle, NO drone, and speak very loudly when on the gas hard. These are real chambered mufflers like the oldschool muscle cars ran.

I've got an exhaust similar to what Mr Brooks posted. This is what stock manifolds, stock Y-pipe, high flow cat, and the catback sounds like.

I used to have no cat and a Flowmaster American Thunder.....I swapped to a high flow cat with the GMMG. It was still louder even with the cat (and Flowmasters aren't known for being quiet). But the sound improvement was night and day.

Re: Chambered
From an old thread of mine.
Stock manifolds and Y-pipe, no cat, Flowmaster American Thunder.
Idle 72 dB
70 mph 80 dB
WOT 88 dB
Idle is a cold start inside the garage. 70 mph is in O/D. WOT is measured at 5000 RPM under load. "A" weighted dB scale used. All are done inside the car with the windows closed, radio off, A/C set to OFF.
Stock manifolds and Y-pipe, Catco cat, GMMG with oval tips.
Idle 73 dB
70 mph 78-80 dB
WOT 90 dB
A bit louder at idle. Hard to get a good reading on the highway as the second you lift your foot off the gas it's ultra quiet. The Flowmaster was loud all the time on the highway. The WOT figure is misleading. Although 2 dB doesn't sound like much, consider that with the GMMG I'm getting 88 dB at 4000 RPM (the same as the Flowmaster at 5000 RPM)

Dynomax are pretty much the quiestest aftermarket exhaust there is.

Yep. The 69 Camaros had that as an option if memory serves me correct. They have no drone at all. Zero. An aggresive but not obnoxious idle. I prefer to think of it as a tuned sound rather than a loud sound. And once you get around 3500 RPM, the trumpets sing.

Re: Chambered
Ok, that still sounds weak to me. I love the sound of SBC's hooked to open headers, with just enough piping to get the exhaust away from the spark plug wires or anything else flammable, that is, unless I have to make a quick, silent getaway from a women's place....
