budget header question..

327 making about 320hp going into my 84 t/a.. or rather in, but i need headers... Y-pipe will be made afterwards at a shop since the current one is a big piece of crap.. shaped like a T.. rest of exhaust isnt too bad though.. anyways

had some hooker comp 2466 headers for a monte carlo.. no fit on the pass side.. have some hooker super comp full length headers for a monte carlo...wouldnt fit in the passenger seat, much less then engine bay...

I was looking at this
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

summit's model which says it will fit directly in.. im trying to pick up headers for about what i can sell the others for.. which is about the price of the summit headers, but are they decent or a waste of 90 bux? and do they actually fit worth a damn?

thanks!

Re: budget header question..

Those are about as cheap as headers get. The quality might be lacking in some areas, and they's a bit small, only 1 1/2" primaries.

Re: budget header question..

I've used these and yes they fit just fine. Headers in general are a pain in the a$s to install unless you have the engine on a cherrypicker.

They are as good as they get for the price.

That is the best deal ive seen for headers. I need to find out if i can get those in mine too. California has some stricked smog laws.

They are not emissions legal headers.

As for "budget", unless you have a special relationship with a competent exhaust shop (not "muffler" shop), it is typically more expensive to use those headers by the time you've paid to get them hooked up to the rest of your exhaust than it is to just start with headers & y-pipe that come as a kit.

The typical Hooker 2055HKR recommendation is only technically legal on '86-'90 TPI single cat applications. Hedman & Edelbrock make dual cat emissions legal headers. '91 is a "gray area" car, because single cats were 2-1/4", and "good" headers for that is, well, "difficult".

Not true. These fit with just about all y-pipes that Summit sells. They range from various prices. I spoke with Summit when I bought these and they fixed me up for the budget I had. Summit headers and Flowtech y-pipe. A few years ago they were a little cheaper then now. I think I spent about $160 with the shipping included and all gaskets came with it. It's gonna cost you a little more now but you can make it under $200.

However you are correct, they are NOT 50 state legal.

Also not true. Y pipes are by no means interchangeable. Those headers will work with a Flowtech Y pipe, because they're actually Flowtech headers rebranded with the Summit name. They will not fit any other Y pipe.

Re: budget header question..

cool, thanks much for the info everyone! I think i will pick these up.. i just need them to support about 300-330hp for now, I dont care about emissions (thank god.. car is about to hit 25yrs old, and classic car status in GA) and I have an engine hoist if it is a must...and the summit store is about 20 miles away...

unless someone tells me they wont handle the power im trying to run right now, ill pick them up.

Wrong!!! Call Summit and they will tell you that they have an assortment of y-pipes to fit this setup.

If you are unsure of them Regal1975, give Summit a call or email them. MOST of the time, MOST, they are pretty good with tech support. They always been really good to me.

They are typically good.

When it comes to "specialty" questions, which means most anything about our cars, they are often wrong.
