hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
Hey,
I was modifying my y pipe today (HOK-16767HKR), converting it to a 3'' outlet, and found something interesting. These sure look nice on the outside but maybe not so much on the inside. Here is the original outlet cut off the y pipe on top of the pipe that it is being replaced with. Look at how much the weld ran into it:

Here it is with the new outlet pipe:

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
Thanks, I got the pipe from Mandrel Bending Solutions http://www.mandrelbendingsolutions.c...=Mandrel+Bends
I ordered 1 90, 2 45's, and a piece of straight pipe to fill in between the y pipe and the cat back. They shipped it pretty quickly and all of the pipe was formed well.

this is exactly what i need to do with my y pipe. how did you get the 3 inch pipe to fit onto the ypipe since its bigger? did you have to flatten it out some?

Yes, I flattened out the new outlet pipe such that the resulting oval shape would more or less match up with the cut in the y pipe. It was fairly painful getting the two to match up close enough for the weld, but worth the effort, especially after seeing how the original pipe was choked off.

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
well now that i see that works, i guess thats what ill do. My plan was to cut the whole Y piece off the y-pipe so its two seperate pieces, then put 90* bends on each piece and then join them back into a 3inch with a Y-pipe where the cat would be, if i had one.

Wow! I wasn't really planning on changing the collector to 3 inch but after seeing that now I see that it is worth any money/time/effort that it takes to do it.

Thats not weld your seeing. Its flashing from when they used a saw to cut that section. To lazy to clean it before welding the joint. Mass production at its finest!

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
If it was weld it should be dripping in all the way around the pipe. 360* of weld, 360* of drip. Its flashing from the cut. #1 because its only on one half of the pipe where the cut was started #2 beause weld penetration wouldn't have razor sharp edges like your 2nd picture shows. 20 years of custom exhaust/header fabrications......trust me, it ain't weld.

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
I see your point. The thing that was confusing to me was the cross section, it seemed like it was angled and I couldn't see how flashing could do that. So I opened it up some more and the angle is actually coming from the pipe itself and the thin metal extending into it is the flashing just like you said.

I can't believe they would put something together like this knowing how bad that part of the pipe is constricted, and there is almost no way to see it when the y pipe is assembled. When I originally thought it was weld, I thought that's bad, but it is just sloppy worksmanship and they can't really inspect for it, but this is something that they must know is happening. Not buying from hooker anymore that's for sure.

The sad part is that it would only take someone 30 seconds to dumor that flashing out of there. I see it everyday..........a complete lack of pride in your work. Sad.

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
Well only having seen one of them I can't really be sure, but based on some of the other comments in this thread is sounds like a pretty common thing. There are actually two bad things going on with these because they just let the two pipes overlap inside of where they are going to weld them together and then the problem of the flashing makes it even worse. I don't think you can really get at it to file it down because it is back behind the 90 degree bend. You can sort of imagine where it would be looking at the second picture, this cross section is just a little further than the weld between the original y pipe and the new piece I put on.

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
yes thats true, or you can cut the pipe where it meets (where they overlap them and do the shitty welding) and then clean them out and have them re welded with a perfect fit. im just saying...it could work for the better.

Re: hooker y pipe ugly internal weld
It's obvious that this is left this way because the owner would have to cut his pipe in half to ever see it, so I would expect that all of the Hooker y's look like this.
It would be very interesting to see what the results of Nevernamed's mods are.
