Question about air pump on L98

So I went to get my car inspected and it failed because this air pump was not hooked up, the mechanic says it usually puts air into the intake manifold or cat, (this is the pump on the passenger side bottom of the engine) But my car has a complete new exhaust with headers, 3inch pipe, magnaflow high flow cat and dual edlebrock exhaust. So could someone explain a little more about this pump and what it does? now the camaro had a stock 305 and this L98 was swapped into it, so I want to see what I could do and if this system even works with the car. Hope you can understand me.

Air pump (aka smog pump) simply pumps air into your exhaust. Blows it into the exhaust manifolds and into the catalytic converter. The extra air helps burn the exhaust more completely by increasing oygen in the burn and thus raises the burn temperature as well.

so how do I connect this to my new exhaust system? or does it not need it? cause they said it wont pass without it, but I was thinking about seeing if they could just let it slide cause i would need to go back to stock, parts I dont have, to make it work

I assumed you ment "was NOT getting"

No, I did not notice anywhere in your previous posts. I only had the info you posted. Thats why I did one and found that thread.

Also, the search here is kinda sucky. Sometimes you get exactly what you need, sometimes you don't.

Re: Qestioan about air pump on L98

so on an 85 camaro there is a metal tube that sits down by the headers on the passenger side, of the engine bay, it looks like it curves around behind the engine, but does it go to the cat? I need to re-hook this system and he said I dont have to do the manifolds since they arent there just to the cat, so i just want to run the pipe and put the belt on and take it right back off.

Re: Question about air pump on L98

Not trying to be a smart a**, but did you follow the tube by the passenger header that curves around behind your engine?

Where does it go?

It should go from the converter connection in the pic above to the cat itself. But I dunno if the Magnaflow cat you have even has a provision for the tube to connect to.

Pics of your car would be helpful in this situation. I am afraid that you may get screwed, and have to replace some of your exhaust to pass inspection. You may get lucky, maybe your cat has the provision to connect to the tube that connects to the diverter valve. I hope so. Otherwise you may have to replace you cat with one that has the proper provisions you need.
