Re: Installing a cat after the muffler?

probably wont get hot enought to light off, so the cat wont really DO anything, the muffler turns the noise of the exhaust into heat, so after the muffler i'd be suprised if it EVER lit off the cat, my cat is under my rear seat as part of my single 3" pipe, and it BARELY gets hot enough

Re: Installing a cat after the muffler?

well, i built a new exhaust and i opted to put the muffler where the cat was to help with routing in the rear around my fuel system, so with this plan the cat would be in the tunnel, right behind the trans. the muffler is a straight through design "absorption" muffler, so im sure quite a bit of heat gets through it.

Anybody else? I MAY be about to squeeze it and the muffler in line with each other if i shuffle things around a little, thus putting the cat ahead of the muffler

even if you had a straight pipe, theres a limit to how far back you should put the cat. It all comes down to heat.

Where were you planning on putting it?

Id imagine it wouldnt do what its supposed to past the rear seat area. (assuming you have a straight pipe).

Re: Installing a cat after the muffler?

It might be alright there.

The furthest back cat i can think of on a factory car, is a 2003 v6 mustang that i have seen. They have it around there. But the car also runs 2 cats (for each bank) so its one behind the other.....

Re: Installing a cat after the muffler?

im thinking it will be ok, i mean, if you run LT headers, then a collector, and short piece of pipe then the cat, its putting the cat is a similar place, maybe within a foot or so. Only problem im seeing is if the muffler will drop the temp by too much? I dont think it will considering the exhaust wrap was baking pretty good where it goes over the axle, and the tip was pretty darn hot after the drive. hmmmm, any other opinions? This project will be on the back burner for a little while, not looking to spent 300bux on a cat this time of year.

Re: Installing a cat after the muffler?

Yea but how many long tube header cars run cats?........

Exhaust wrap! thats a good idea, I didnteven think of that. You could just wrap it around your intermediate pipes and go with that.

Why not put some numbers to it? Look up how hot your cat needs to be to function correctly, and just run the car to see how hot it gets at that location.

You could probably get it hot enough if u drove it for morethan 15 mins at a time.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. Just out it in there. Youre probably more concerned about clearance.
