Hooker/Doug's general review and y-pipe documentation
I figured I would throw this up here since there really wasn't much help when I was looking for something like this. I am installing the Doug's long tubes into my car along with a T56 and figured I should go for the best possible y pipe design that I could. I don't think this will work with an auto because of clearances around the sides of it but I am going to be using a Skulte t56 swap crossmember to make ground clearance as good as I can get it.
Parts used were a 3" dual inlet, 4" outlet Flowmaster merge collector (work of art IMO) and a set of 3" Hedman s extensions. All total I have around $80-100 in this setup total and it damn near fits without ANY modifications at all. It will take some and I will document that when its time. On to the pictures...
Comparing old (hedman 2-2.5" y to new custom y)

Showing just how much bigger the outlet is between the two..

One more comparing the overall size difference..

Any questions, comments or concerns?

That's where I planned on it going. I want it to run pretty similar to the 4th gens instead of all over the under side of the car.

Also, I realize that the setup isn't going to stay that simple in order to fit through the crossmember but figured I will post up before and after shots.

I've got a setup a lot like that.... but I decided I wanted a dump at the axle so my ground clearance isnt great at the back of the car, but I can always run it over the axle later. For now I like the dump. The whole system is pretty much even with the front subframes which is pretty much even with the collectors. The 3.5 inch single pipe at the back takes about a half inch away from the ground clearance (dual 2.5's into a single 3.5) but that's not a big deal if you just tuck it over the axle.

You can see from the side where the dual 2.5-3.5 collector pipe starts.
I dont see why you'd run it down the middle with the torque arm right there, though?

Actually by middle I meant pretty much what you did. Looks like I might need more piping though? I didn't think about the transmission being so long...lol. I wonder if I can buy just one hedman s extension? Sucks that the best shop around for exhaust work doesn't have a mandrel bender..

Ok so after working around them today I figured I would post up some better thoughts on the headers themselves. They look amazing, MUCH better than any coated header I have ever seen actually. I did have to finish cutting the #8 primary off since for some reason the cut through the flange wasn't finished. No biggy though.
They literally slipped right and and if I had to do it again, I will drop the transmission. Made the job MUCH easier. I might have to pull the passenger side and grind like in the 2210 install thread because it just does touch.
Plug access is not bad. However, with a gear ratchet I was able to get all the spark plugs on the driver's side. I didn't try the passenger side but they should be accessable with some work.
WELL worth the money, especially since they are a couple hundred cheaper than the Hooker 2210s for the exact same product.

BTW, another option for extensions might be this kit from Flowmaster:

You get really more than you need but this would probably allow you to put the merge where ever you wanted it under the car. Mine will need more piping for sure since its right where the driveshaft enters the transmission so I don't think I can put the merge there with good enough clearance. One thing is for sure, this will cut a LARGE portion of my intermediate pipe off. Basically all that will be left of it is a piece that is a little shorter than the driveshaft.
