Smog pump

Hello. I drive a 85 iroc z with a 305 tpi. So I was wondering, i was doing research on what a smog pump does and I think I know now. It takes some of the unburned exhaust out from the headers and puts it back into your intake to reduce emmisions? Oh and it runs off a pulley. So if this is all true I think I want to remove mine for sure! It seems like mine runs off of its own individual belt. I was wondering if, for the moment, I could just remove the belt and see the difference in power? I looked up a lot of threads on this though and people need to reroute their belts? I'm still kind of new at this but I don't think I need to reroute mine so if someone can clear that up for me it would be great!

You're mixing EGR and A.I.R. (aka, "smog pump").

EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Under certain conditions, it mixes a small amount of exhaust gases back into the intake air/fuel stream to cool the combustion temperatures to reduce the production of nitrogen oxygen compounds, which are air pollutants.

Air Injection Reaction is the "smog pump". It puts some air into the exhaust to help promote the burning of unburnt fuel while the engine is warming up, and into the cat to improve the efficiency of the catalyst.

Oh alright thanks a lot for clearing that up for me five7kid. So can I remove the smog pump so that i can free up some xtra hp by deleting the pulley? And I think my pump just runs off a single belt. So can I just remove the belt? Would there be any drawbacks?

Re: Smog pump

The .001 hp you'll gain by removing the pump, won't be worth no longer passing come inspections.

You WILL NOT feel ANY increase in horsepower. What you WILL get is a car that no longer passes at inspection time & a heft fine for tampering with Federal Emissiojns equipment.

Re: Smog pump

What inspections?

The main reason to ditch it is when it breaks and locks up. A smaller belt is cheaper than a new pump. Plus the weight savings is nice.

Re: Smog pump

Well I removed mine to clear up some of the clutter in the engine, that and my headers werent emissions headers. Around here I know they dont do emissions test so I'm pretty safe, but if they do emissions tests in your area I would just leave it on. If you do end up taking it off though, make sure to keep it just in case you ever have to have the thing tested. If you do desire though, all u havta do is take the belt off and then the pump itself and your set.

I know its a little off topic but it seems like ur lookin to add a little more power, u should look into putting an underdrive pulley on it if you already havent.

Not in awhile, off the floor in my car port, where it is currently laying.

Maybe I'll go weigh it for you. I doubt it would even hit 5 lbs. Even IF something was 10lbs, losing 10lbs alone ain't gonna do anything to make a car faster. It certainly putting enough drag on an engine to ever be of any noticeable drag.

Re: Smog pump

13 pounds IS nothing. But...

"If you can't remove a pound from one place, remove 1 ounce from 16 places."

A/C delete by itself doesn't matter.
Rear seat delete by itself doesn't matter.
Fiberglass hood by itself doesn't matter.
Aluminum driveshaft by itself doesn't matter.

But they add up. 120 pounds matters.

Re: Smog pump

Well as much as I understand weight reduction can help a car go faster, I was actually doing it just for the pulley delete. You guys don't think I'll get much horsepower out of it? I mean the motor is still stock I'm working on getting the car running in good shape first before I do anything major. I just thought that if you get rid of a pulley obviously less strain on the engine. What do you guys think my hp increase will be?

Re: Smog pump

Well if I would have to say anything, maybe 1-2 horsepower. It does take drag off the engine, so their will be an increase, just nothing that you will be able to feel.

Its more or less worth it more for the fact that if you plan to do any mods later down the road, like headers, it makes it alot easier because you dont have to fight with all the smog equipment.

It doesn't take 1 hp to run the A.I.R. pump.

Re: Smog pump

Route the output hose into the intake and gain over a hundred hp. Kinda like a little supercharger

Don't forget the blinker fluid and reservoir delete, and the addition of chrome reverse muffler bearings.
