ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

A switchable exhaust. I was thinking that having an exhaust system to switch from flowmaster to stock/more quiet muffler on demand. The reason being the exhaust tone is loud and disturbs neighbors at night while warming up, and heading home or to my lady friend's.. I was thinking of using a switchable cutouts and going from there. To be able to switch the car to quiet mode and while driving throw the gear in neutral, turn off engine, flip the switch to flowmaster and start the car and put in to drive all while going 35 mph. Its different, but i like that these cars can be customized to suit the needs of the driver whatever it maybe, even the stealth muff

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

I'd just quiet down your stock exhaust then have a cut-out which goes to flowmaster. However I'm not exactly sure how you would fit a second full-size muffler under our cars, space is extremely tight. Personally I would have the cut out go to a glasspack or some other small muffler/resonator and would just switch to the quiet exhaust while on the highway.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

The problem isn't fitting the mufflers. There are plenty of people here with dual exhaust in different ways. The problem would be that if you have 2 mufflers and a cutout, when you flip the cut out you're opening a new path but you are NOT closing the old path. So exhaust flow will probably take the path of less resistance more (Flowmaster) and still make noise. You would have to fabricate some sort of custom "Y" cut out with 2 butterflies instead of one. Close one and open the other and vice-versa...

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

Here's the idea I just came up with to switch back and forth between systems. The red line is the blade that can swing back and forth in the line shown by the thin gray line. The green represents the cable that hooks to the handle which is in blue. It's a very simple design that we use every day in HVAC systems that could be made to work on an exhaust setup.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

Thank you for the enthusiasm people. I got sum ideas from your posts and tried illustrating my idea, it seems complicated or worthless, but doesn't have to be.. Heres the idea, after the exhaust leaves the catalytic converter its routed into an oversize y pipe with two cutouts(Cutouts are red in the illustration) adequate sizes for best flow, and the cutouts have electric solenoids they are wired to a two way switch so its either/or exhaust switching from flowmaster to deadening sounding muffler. I included an option of adding a cutout for open exhaust and wiring a three way switch but thats overkill. If i happen to do this, ill take a few pics, with how-to and parts list why not.
*edit, i dont know if i explained the switch in detail right. but i bet despite that, youll get the idea. I encourage any constructive criticism.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

I think FYRCHKN is right. The simplest would be to have 1 flap that interchanges between loud muffler pipe and stock muffler pipe... Here is a quick paint of how you can route things...

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

i like the flap idea, however, would machining a piece/flap but well enough to seal and set. I think its a great idea. My interpretation of the dual cutouts was the practicality of assembling off the shelf parts, despite the y pipe and exhaust pipe being cut up and welded with muffler. I once used to work for a Hvac company, challenging running ducting in 100 degree weather.

* i think this describes what youre talking about, of coarse larger pipe than the 2inch in the pic, but same idea, i wonder if this would work http://static.summitracing.com/globa...e/mrg-5424.jpg also im wondering about how well it holds position.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

Why not just have a electronic cut-out on a quieter exhaust, and open it up when not in da hood? It'll be plenty loud with NO MUFFLER in the system! Get rid of the Flowmaster - every bumpkin and his brother has them and they sound like crap on anything except a Mustang, and get a Hooker Aerochamber - much quieter sound, but higher flow than a Flowmaster - then do the electric cutout before it.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

Personally, I don't much care for the noise, so I'd just build a high flow exhaust with a reasonably quiet high flow muffler and run it, but that's me.
Cut-outs have been around for decades. You should be able to find something off the shelf.
There'd be no need to block off the quiet system. It'll just help with flow if left open.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

Just get a stock 4th gen catback and run a cutout on it. Your engine does not make enough power to make the 4th gen exhaust a restriction and you can have the loudness when you want it. Get an electric motor for it and be done. You could probably sell what you have if its an actual catback for enough to cover getting a stock catback, cutout, and motor and having it installed.

Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

All great idea. I like them all. wouldn't trying out all your ideas in a R & D facility better than the BBK joke with the turtle plenum ha. i thought about the aerochamber, but then came across the hush power by flow-master ( http://www.hushpower.com/product/32/...22+-+304S.html ) its about a foot long. On a side note, how is it that flow-master sucks? i thought that was a must. Isnt the flow-master flow better, the slight restriction it creates better torque. if not ill just ditch it. i like quiet now anyway, better gas mileage op-pt for the flow-master, why not have best both worlds i say. Great ideas, ill be sure to repost if this goes through. Thinking of the exhaust welder dude, he'll probably shake his head at me. but its at he least its clever. peace

*i just watched a video of the hush power, forget it, haha, its too loud, ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iebGdFz3qg ) im going to check out that aerochamber

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

I guess I just don't like the Flowmasters because

1) EVERY Mustang has them
2) EVERY Mustang has them because it's the ONLY car they ever sounded nice on

They always just sounded kinda like a sickly pale jaundice Flowmaster on every other car. Maybe it has something to do with a Mustang's other exhaust components - doesn't the Mustang have X-Pipes or H-Pipes where it's not really possible in the F-Body? Anyway - that's why the Flowmaster's suck IMO.

Re: ON demand quiet exhaust idea...

Fords have a different firing order, which is one reason they sound different.

But I've always loved the sound of them on my 90 &92, and the true duals on my 97 Tahoe I had. All were the 2-chamber Flowmasters. Different Flowmasters sound different & maybe you've only heard the quiet ones?

Sound good on the 96 Dodge truck I snuck them on, for a friend of my wife's while they were out for their evening walk!
