Headers on a 5spd?

Ok, so I have looked online, and I've read most of the posts on here and haven't heally gotten anywhere. i have an 85 T/A with the 305 running 601 heads, XE268H cam, Weiand stealth intake. it's not the H.O. one, and those are the only mods. I want to run long tubes, but everywhere I look it says that they won't fit a car with a manual trans. Why? Does anyone make ones that will? I plan on running true dual exhaust. I probably won't be running cats, or at least not yet due to budget restrictions. I don't understand the reason for everyone running Y-pipes. So some insite on this would be nice too. Also muffeler recomendations would be nice too. More than likely I'll be running a set of those cheap raptors for a little while, but hope to upgrade. Thought about glass packs but they wouldn't be as cool as they were on my old 75 Camaro. Oh, this is only a temporary engine. Within the next 6 months i hope to have my 383 finished and dropped in.

So I found a set that is within my price range, and are basically what I'm looking for, but want to make sure they will fit. Here is the part number, sorry I for got to copy the link. 68460 They are headman.

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

im running a set of edelbrock AIR tube headers with a Y pipe, is there a certain reason you wanna run long tubes? theyre a PITA with ground clearance and shorties are the best option, your only real option for "duals" is gonna be a pace setter system, both tubes run along the original exhaust routing side by side

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

Ok. this isn't the news that i was hoping for, but things never go as easy as I'd like when it comes to working on a car. I'll look into those.

68460s won't clear the clutch slave cylinder without modification.

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

That explains it. I couldn't understand why they would fit an auto, but not a stick. i completely forgot about that. Now can anyone fill me in on the wole Y-pipe thing? I'm guessing it's just because even with duals, you still have to run them down the passenger side. You know I love thses cars, but the engineers at GM really made it a pain to do stuff to them.

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

I have the Hooker Lt's with my 5 speed and they fit just fine. Besides having to grind in some spots for clearancing they work perfectly with a 5 speed.

Single exhaust is cheaper and easier to route than dual exhaust, for pretty close to the same performance.

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

yeah that pace setter setup is expensive, my buddy got lucky and bought a GTA with it already installed, and you cant tell the difference between his exhaust and mine

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

when i bought mine there was nothing no motor trans or exhaust. was looking for header and everyone told me that shortys only way to go. so i went cheap went with summits brand.have to say there not bad have had to replace gaskets once but what ever there cheap and not that hard. but bought a dynomax pipping with flowmasters. true duals sounds awsome but when it gets to the rear end only couple opts. mine looks like s**t. it show to run mufflers on top each other and both out drivers side well i wanted out both sides. was able but driver side looks normal but pass. side it at an angle and u can c the muffler. so i think i came up with idea. couple months ill c if itll work. cant find a muffler with dual in and outs that would fix my promblem.

Re: Headers on a 5spd?

I think I've got a couple of weeks of learning ahead of me. I'll probably end up learning like I always do, The hard way. I'm thinking i'll just go buy a set of long tubes at autozone, or somewhere that I can return them when I figure out they don't fit. I'll take a weekend and try to fit them up and figure out all the problems, and then spend a couple of weeks fiuging out how to fix the problems. I'm determined to make this work, and to do it cheap. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
