y-pipe
looking for a new stock replacement y-pipe for an 89 Camaro. Anyone know where I can find one for a descent price? I've looked around and have only seen y-pipes for use with headers.

Re: y-pipe
There are a few from which to choose, and all are 2-1/2" tubes into a 3" tube.
MAC makes one, 16 ga. steel with a paint coating on it. I have it on my car. It's nice, much better flowing than the stock y-pipe, and it's a perfect fit. You can buy it directly from MAC:
http://www.macperformance.com/store/...Product_ID=450
Or you can get the MAC y-pipe from Hawk's, where it's marked down:
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ca...enty-pipe.aspx
Hawk's also sells its own-made stainless steel y-pipe, but it's expensive:
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ha...manifolds.aspx
Magnaflow makes one, stainless steel, looks like a nice one. You can buy it from Jegs:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Magnaflow/642/16450/10002/-1
Jegs used to sell a crappy one that was very expensive, and that's what I was looking for but didn't find. Instead I found the one by Magnaflow, which I haven't seen before, so it must be new.
And I didn't see any at Summit, so these are probably your only choices.

Re: y-pipe
Question on y-pipe such-as mac#48692 and Magnaflow#642-16450. These y-pipes are listed for 1986 to 89 or 92 years. Would these y-pipes fit a 1985 Firebird with stock 305 exhaust mainfolds on a installed 350ci with the same stock manifolds in place with the stock heat riser on the RH side. Is the 3" collector the only diferance between 85 and 86 years? I wont the 3" collector but I need to use the stock manifold setup on my '85 bird for now. Thanks.

Re: y-pipe
The TPI's spacer is solid, whereas yours is mechanical(right?). And that spacer is necessary to make the new y-pipe fit, just like it's necessary to make the stock y-pipe fit. But whether or not the solid spacer is dimensionally the same size as your mechanical spacer, I don't know. They probably are the same size, so the new pipe probably will work with older set-ups, but I've never looked into it, so I can't confirm that.

Re: y-pipe
Thanks "LAFfireboyd" for the shout. My heat riser is mechanical. Think I'll use my 2-1/2" y-pipe for now, but I'm still thinking of using a 3" y-pipe collector and pipes later. I better use what I got now if I'm going to get this bird running by Summer. Once I get my 4-to-8 swap done I can come back and work on fine tuning everything. Maby by then more information will come up on the y-pipe in question.

Re: y-pipe
'85 had the same V8s as '86 and '87, so there's no reason the y-pipe shouldn't fit at the manifolds/spacer. So it's probably the fitment of the cat that was different prior to '86.
The new y-pipe is for a 3" slip-fit cat, but some earlier years used a bolt-on cat, so they can't say it would work with earlier 'stock' systems(without changing the entire exhaust system). So to use the pipe with an earlier system, you'd have to change to a 3" slip-fit cat, and you'd probably be replacing the cat-back too. So given such a full-system change, you're free to do anything you want, including the new y-pipe.

Does the Y pipe like magnaflow and mac that as a 2.5 inch collector for the headers can be use with hooker 2460? because the 2460 has a 3 inch collector I think, and i can't find a Y pipe with a 3 inch collector for the herders
Thanks!

Re: y-pipe
No, sorry, the MAC and Magaflow y-pipes won't work with any headers. They're designed specifically to fit the stock exhaust manifolds.
Most header manufacturers usually make a y-pipe for their headers, offering it either with the headers as a package, or for separate purchase. So you'd have to check with Hooker in this case. If they don't offer a y-pipe for their 2460, then you'd have to have one custom-made.

Re: y-pipe
Will the 16450 magnaflow or mac y-pipe fit a TBI car?
Ive read that TPI and TBI cars have different sized collectors and angles that make the Y-pipes diffrent. My car is a 89 l03 with a REALLY crappy looking y-pipe.

Re: y-pipe
A direct bolt-on swap? No. But could it be made to fit? Yes.
There's nothing different about the angle of the exhaust manifold/Y-pipe, so that shouldn't be a problem.
However, these are designed for 3" cats, and the stock LO3 cat is smaller. So to make it work, you'd need a reducer of the appropriate size to make it mate with your stock cat; or you could just swap everything to a 3" cat and cat-back exhaust system.

Re: y-pipe
What about the different flange sizes on the manifolds? https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...pipe-size.html
Re: y-pipe
No. The V6 is pretty much it's own beast because the manifolds are completely different. A V8 setup would need to be modified to work.
Walker/Dynomax manufactures a complete line of stock replacement Y pipes, and converters. www.walkerexhaust.com Most chain stores can get them, or they're available through Summit. They won't flow much different then stock, but they're an option.
That's wrong... If you look the drivers side manifold exits pretty much the same between the low output manifolds and the high output manifolds. However, the passengers side manifolds dump at a different angle. It's about a 20* difference that requires modifying the y-pipe to make it bolt up.

Re: y-pipe
IIRC I think all V6 manifolds are the same,....... some don't have ANY smog provisions and smog tubes might be different from engine to engine.
LG4 and LO3 manifolds are the same size.
CFI manifolds are the same size as LG4's - but the pass flange is specific to CFI.
L69, LB9 and L98 manifolds are the same size.
The heat-riser ( or Spacer ) are also different sizes to match the size of the flange on the pass side manifold. ( L69 is bigger then LG4's )
* Not thinking smog tubes here, They are different based on the engine.
Correct. FYI: There's a pair of LB9 manifolds bolted to a stock L69 Y-Pipe ( oval Cat ) in my 83 Z28. The angle of the L69 manifold was the same as the angle of the LB9.
POP6482 - Be sure to specify your exact year/make/model/engine so your replacement Y pipe fits correctly without additional mods !
