location of dynomax bullets

does anybody know where the best place is to put the dynomax bullet in? i've heard it cackles pretty bad if it isn't at the end of the exhaust?

Re: location of dynomax bullets

Here is my TSP Rumbler LS1 catback, on my L98.

The muffler is right under the rear seat, on the passenger side (of course). Exhaust then goes over the axle & splits into 2 outlets.

Re: location of dynomax bullets

Its a raspy kind of muffler since it does little to muffle sound, but it seems to me that if using a ypipe, the y pipe merge will determine how bad the rasp is.

LS1 cars have this problem alot since alot of the ypipes just cut and paste into 1 tube instead of having a nice transition like a proper collector Y should have. Flowmaster Y collector is a nice setup to help smooth out the exhaust flow. Does help eliminate rasp.

Having the muffler in the I pipe (infront of the axle but behind the cat) seems to drone abit more inside the car at 2200-2500 rpm or so. Atleast all the round mufflers i had on my two previous motors did this.

I now have a dual setup with x pipe and bullets mounted at the rear of the car exiting out the bumper. Only had the car fired up for a few minutes and few mild revs but they sound awesome and no rasp so far.. Need to take it out again to verify under full rpm range.

My friend had a pair of bullets right at the header on his stang and they were very raspy.True dual H pipe setup. Location may have an effect on the sound but I dont have an explaination as to why

Same reason vette LS motors dont sound the same as Fbody LS motors. Location and length of exhaust changes the tone I guess.

Re: location of dynomax bullets

I dunno...I've never thought of mine as raspy at all. Very mild (too mild?) under part throttle & at cruising speed.

Floor it & you know its there!

My videos

In particular this video showing the tach, so you know what kinda throttle is being used....

i have a shorty hooker header and y-pipe set up..the transitions seem very smooth as it goes into one single exhaust..i really like your set up for true duals, but in your video it seemed like maybe one pipe was out-flowing the other? just curious as to why it looked that way lol. i noticed your bullets were also at the end and there was no raspy noice and thats the sound im looking for

yours sounds really nice maybe just a little raspy but that is tolerable...where is your muffler located?

Re: location of dynomax bullets

I wasnt sure why it was steaming more on one pipe than the other either. I guess more flow went through that side as it came out the x pipe. Once rpms climb up and exhaust volume builds it should even out.

I have a bullet type muffler on my LS1 trans am and with cats there is no or little rasp i should say. Cats help alot on cutting down that rasp because my y pipe is CRAP.

As long as you have a good transition of flow in the system it should sound good. If you dont mind single outlet, put it towards the rear of the car. I think they sound better out further back. IF you want dual exits out the back. Run 2 short bullets or just use 1 i the I pipe region. I'd run 2 if you dont have cats and dont want it to be super loud. 2 should still be loud

Re: location of dynomax bullets

Not sure off hand but its 80 bucks for mufflers, 80 for xpipe i think, 120 for vbands I used. 240 or so in pipe materials, 100 for the tips. I think I needed about 11 J-bend pipes at 22 bucks apiece. From tailpipes to header.

SOmewhere near 650 bucks. Well worth it tho.

any type of muffler is better off further back.too far up & its way more restrictive,so whatever the farthest back you can get would be ideal.

Why would location further forward or back make a difference?

By your reasoning.....
The Import style of having the muffler as a tip, would be the "best solution".......No pipes after the muffler at all.

Re: location of dynomax bullets

the velocity drops off the further it goes so it flows thru restrictions a bit easier.i think of it like pouring alot of water at once into a funnel or pouring slower...too much & well the end result is a back up(like having the muffler closer means backpressure) but a slower constant flow works much better.as for the import style thing that to me is having a open exhaust.they keep the pea-shooter pipe but have a 5 inch exit..but i think if that idea were used on a real car,say using cherry bombs, mounting those as close as possible to the very end would be ideal.aesthetically it sucks, but thats what tips are for.

Re: location of dynomax bullets

I've always noticed that the longer the tail pipes after the muffler, the more it "toned" the sound and eliminated rasp.
