Best headers for 383 w/ AFR 1040s ?

Looking to find some headers for my 383. Its running a Victor Jr. and AFR 1040s. Ive heard of people having some issues with the port sizes, so if anyone could recommend some nice headers it would be greatly appreciated!

i hear dyno don's 1-3/4 headers work great with a 383 and should work with the AFR heads. at least that is what was suggested to me

it's a member on this forum. He is reproducing the SLP 1-3/4 shorties since they stopped making them. from what I hear he does excellent work. top down solutions is selling them here not to mention they are a sponsor for this site. check it out

The AFR heads have a slightly larger exhaust port than a standard SBC head. Don's headers will clear the AFR head exhaust port. I don't know of any other header for our cars that can make that claim. You do not want any exhaust restictions.

Re: Best headers for 383 w/ AFR 1040s ?

Step headers will actually help with the power, doing a set now for 1040 heads that come out of the flange at 1 3/4" then step to 1 7/8" with 32" tubes and a 3 1/2" collector... Engine isn't done yet, but it will get break in time and a few pulls on the dyno when it's finished.

Shroty headers are a step above the cast iron exhaust manifolds, but certainly not the hot setup for performance... Depends on what you need for headers, if it's a street car in Ca., I suppose the shorties with AIR tubes are probably about the best the law will allow...

We have done dyno tests with both here in Ca., the difference isn't worth talking about.

Very minor gain in some areas.

Now if you are talking all out racing.....different story.

Re: Best headers for 383 w/ AFR 1040s ?

Need a 1 3/4 port to effectively cover the AFR exhaust port. I've tested 1 5/8 hooker 2055's and hooker 2210 1 3/4 headers and the 1 3/4's clear the port. I've built my turbo manifolds with 1 3/4 rectangular ports and it cleared more than enough. Used Hooker prewelded stubs flanges for that setup.

Knowing what I know now after seeing some results of dyno don's headers versus longtubes, i'd go with his headers for best ground clearance. Longtubes dont offer the room for good exhaust clearance IF using an automatic transmission. T56 with right crossmember or maybe even a T5 tranny will allow some room to run the pipes between the frame rails along side the transmission. Autos do not have the room there and you must go under the frame rails. Leaves very little room.

Re: Best headers for 383 w/ AFR 1040s ?

shorty headers and y pipe should clear any oil pan for camaro/firebird. Most long tubes will clear most oil pans. I had Canton's road race 6qt pan with huge side kickouts and my long tubes cleared with ministarter.

I have canton's drag pan for my turbo car now and theres plenty of room for shorties and y pipe.

Dyno Dons headers are 1 3/4 tubes with 2 1/2 collectors and depending on your application 2 1/2in for dual cats or 2 1/2in into 3in Y-Pipe for single cat.
