SLP Headers

I jus bought an lt1...i plan on a rebuild and motor swap. The headers i want are the SLP Performance 1 3/4" headers.....i understand how rare and valuable they are, i dont care about cost because i want THAT setup. Any vendors or anyone who could possibly have a set for sale....i would prefer the stainless steel with the high luster ceramic coating.

any advice or even reference to another set of headers that have a good reputation as far as fitment and link to thirdgen.org classifieds. Thanks to anyones much valued opinion and assistance

Re: SLP Headers

The SLP headers weren't really that great. They were just a little better then some of the other choices that were available. They were always expensive for what they were. Now that they're not available, it's not really worth trying to find a set.

Re: SLP Headers

look up dynodon here in tgo, he makes a set of 1 3/4 shorties like slp, but his are much better fitting. I have a set of SLP's on my car and i absolutely hate them, but for now i am stuck with them.

Re: SLP Headers

I have them on my LT1 now. The driver side header was kinda rough to get in. Hardly any clearance the steering arm rubs against it when turning. The brake lines and fuel lines are extremely close. If you do decide to go with them definitely get some header wrap and notch the number 5 tube. Overall, good headers I love the performance and the additional power I got from them after switching from my Hooker 2055.

Re: SLP Headers

The SLP 1 3/4 headers have always had the reputation that they rub the steering shaft. Even the SLP 1 5/8 headers were only 1/4" from the fuel tank vent line, on my 86 T/A, and I had to bend the brake lines over. Like I said, they didn't live up to the hype. I was ok with them for the $150 I gave for them, but if I'd paid full retail price I would have been a bit annoyed.

I have the 1 3/4" SLP ceramic coated headers on my car. My steering shaft has no clearence issues. I did have to move the brake lines (carefully) a bit. The installation was a pain but then again, I installed them on my drive way without help and a lift. And the only thing that I did have to modify was to install a heated o2 sensor.

That you would have to ask another member on. I honestly don't know since I have them installed on my LG4. And don't intend on getting a 350 engine until mine is dead beyond repair and I have stomped the ground cursing for a day or two.

Re: SLP Headers

I have the SLPs on my supergarged lt1 in the sig below. No issues with the steering shaft. moved the brake lines just because of the closeness.

Ive thought about getting rid of my SLP setup for either long tubes or dyno dons. and mine have less then 100 miles on them.

Re: SLP Headers

SLP's are a great header and to fix that stearing shaft problem you need to unbolt the stearing box down by the frame and move it over some.

Re: SLP Headers

I have the short SLP ceramic coated headers that I installed it a few years ago. It was a pain bending the stainless steel brake lines.

The drive side header is very close to touching the steering shaft with about 1/16” of clearance, but when turning the shaft it touch or rub on the header. What I will do it use a tool file handy or grid down the material to have more clearance, but I have not done it yet. I don’t feel comfortable to unbolt the steering shaft and might caught an issue with alignment. Not sure, if that would happen?

Here is a picture of the driver side with the SS brake lines. I don’t have the after picture of the finished brake lines.

For the others, I am curious how your brake lines are setup and or located? Pictures would help thanks.

How did you get clearance on the number plug. I have mine on the stand and tried accel short plug and still don't have clearance to put the plug wire one. The plug tip in about 1/2 inch from the header tube. I have dart eagle angled heads.

I don't think Tony89GTA meant to move the steering box... There has been discussion in the past that the steering column can be adjusted where it goes through the firewall by loosening the 3 bolts and pushing it over to gain clearance. Moving the column won't effect the alignment.

Woops maybe that's what I did, been about 8 years ago since I installed the headers. Either way I do remember it moving it over a bunch.

Re: SLP Headers

When I designed my shortys I fixed all the problems associated with the SLP's.

They don't hit the steering, 3/8th's thick one piece flange, lots of spark plug clearance, the AIR tubes fit like OEM and there are no gaskets to blow at the collectors (ball & socket).
Also they fit all heads.

They are also available w/o AIR, single cat or dual cat.
Here is one pic:

That's probably the #1 complaint I had about my SLP headers. I guess SLP's idea was to make them universal, but with the AIR tubes sticking straight up they were just in the way. No quantity of adapters and elbows could make up for the fact that they were more intrusive and useless then the stock AIR pipes. I ended up cutting them off flush and having them welded closed. It's nice to see that problem has been fixed.

Pretty much every SLP part I've owned is an overpriced piece of crap, including their headers.

Re: SLP Headers

I have no complaints about the design and materials of
the two sets of SLPs i have had,but both sets had bad
assembly quality problems,2nd set to the point of being
unusable without extensive rework
First set i got around 1995,used them a couple years,
got tired of all the leaks, etc. caused by flanges not
square ,etc. so bought a 2nd pair in 1998 thinking
SLP would have fixed the bad assembly problems by
then;WRONG! had to send these back.
I kept the first set and may one day rework/repair
and reinstall as they definately have better flow than
the smaller edelbrocks i have an now
BTW,when i got the 1st set,SLP also offered an exotic
"tri-y"4-2-1 style set-but that was about $1200
as i recall

Re: SLP Headers

i also had a problem with the flanges not being flat, i had to grind the center flange, on both headers, a lot to make it flat and to get it so seal. Had to touch up the front and rear flanges too.

Re: SLP Headers

I had mine since 1998 and had no problem with them not sealing against the gasket and head. I use a copper gasket for the headers. You just have to get them as tight as you can. I'm using the E3's spark plugs for Corvette heads. It's a little more over a 1/4 in space from the boot touching.
