header power gain?

ok i'm kind of new at the exhaust stuff and want to swap my really old/rusted manifolds for headers and was wondering what the power gain differences are between long tubes and shorties and which brand offers the best fit in a 92 rs(trashed the a/c and replaced compressor with delete pulley)?i'm looking for stainless or something that wont rust, thanks for any suggestions or ideas

Re: header power gain?

On a street car there aren't any advantages of long tubes that outweigh the hassles compared to shortys.

If you want stainless, the only choice I can think of is the Hooker 2460s.

Re: header power gain?

a decent set of brand name headers (ceramic coated) , Y pipe and 3" exhaust are great for a street car . expect to pay a little over 1k for everything . i went with hedman shorties & magnaflow S/S exhaust . i'm happy . don't expect a seat of the pants increase in power . i feel you will see an increase in fuel mileage . good luck .

Re: header power gain?

thanks guys, which is better stainless or ceramic? i've heard ceramic coating eventually comes off and they start to rust,is this true? i've also been told that ceramic keeps under hood temp down?,i'm slowly turning this car into a street/strip car s i'm trying to figure out which would have advantages now and even more so later down the road when i do s/c and all that good stuff

Re: header power gain?

whatever you do decide to go with on the exhaust to get full benefit from it you need to retune the computer

Re: header power gain?

Also, you can shop around and find some good quality, brand name parts used and save a ton of money.I had my y pipe built for 150 and bought my I pipe(3" flowmaster) new for about 125 from a buddy who runs an exhaust shop.I found a set of ceramic coated hookers in great shape for 50 bucks. My car already had a flowmaster muffler on it,so i spent no where near $1000 bucks and still have a good exhaust system.I will spend another 70 bucks or so on either a hooker max flow or magnafliow muffler in the near future.
But......If you`ve got plenty of money buy it new.

Re: header power gain?

There are some SLP headers for sale somewhere on here.

I went with Dyno Don. Very happy with flow, fit and finish.

Ceramic if taken care of can last a life time, it keeps the heat in the tubes were you want it and under hood temps down. Stainless can also last as long, you wont rep the benefits of a ceramic coating but you don't have to worrie about chipping or scratching a tube then start seeing rust, im not a fan of header warps but since its stainless you can probably get away with a wrap and keep under hood temps down but you still wont even come close to a full ceramic coating though.

Re: header power gain?

Or you can just ceramic coat your stainless headers.

Re: header power gain?

I was going to mention that but i thought reading what i posted that statement was obvious, That would be an ideal set of headers

Re: header power gain?

Coating or wrapping stainless headers is asking for trouble.
Stainless will crack if too much heat is applied for too long.
