Need help finding a quiet crossflow muffler
Wow, it has been a long time since I posted anything in this forum!
Maybe you guys can help me with my muffler issue. I am looking to replace my Edelbrock muffler that came with the cat-back. My intent is to quiet the car down so it doesn't drive me crazy at cruise and maybe close to factory. I am actually tired of the loud exhaust but want to retain the "cammy" sound.
I have searched here and just about everywhere, but not much luck. I need to just replace the muffler, no pipes. The muffler must be a crossflow, 3" inlet/dual 2.5" outlet, and must be quiet. Do not mind some power loss, this is not a race car.
No Flowmaster, or Magnaflow. Had those on there before and do not like the sound, plus they would not quiet the car like I want.
My question is, if any of you from personal experience know of a muffler that would meet my criteria.
BTW, I have listened to videos, looked through different suggestions from other posts, and still not much out there.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Need help finding a quiet crossflow muffler
thats a good question about the 4th gen muffler. they might offer a bigger inlet on a stock style muffler. check with your local exhaust shop. you can always try to double up mufflers too. my dynomax ultra flo is quiter than the 80 series flowmaster. I think the dynomax super turbo is quiter than thier ultraflo's

Cherry bomb makes some sort of sound muffler. They used it on horsepower and kept the decibels low and still gained power

Don't get me wrong, I have seen several, including the Dynomax Super Turbo in a Mustang, outlet is 3" and I am not sure how it would sound on my car:

Another I found was the Dynomax Ultra Flo 17227 (3"/2.5") but I am not sure how loud it would be:

I guess I can go ahead with the 3" outlets and just buy the individual pipes. I really don't want to buy a whole new catback, the money is a bit tight right now and we are facing the possibility of moving to another state.

Re: Need help finding a quiet crossflow muffler
I searched for different years and did see some with 3" inlet but the outlets are 3" also. Some with 2.5" outlets have 2.5" inlets, so my pipe size combo is hard to find on a quiet muffler.

Re: Need help finding a quiet crossflow muffler
Thought I would update on my post. I ordered the Dynomax Super Turbo 17670 which is a crossflow with 3" In/2x 3" Out.
The shop had to extend the intermediate pipe to fit this monster back there. The Muffler is definitely thick.
OK, so how does it sound? First consider my GTA has a Lingenfelter cam, Edelbrock TES, Catco Coverter, and now this muffler... all which affect the sound. Standing around the car at idle I can hear that cam sound from the pipes even more now, then that mellow deep rumble with it. Not loud at all. Inside the car at idle you can feel that deep rumble even more. On acceleration you can hear that nice deep sound but not throaty what so ever. On the highway I can hear more wind and road noise (and the rattles too) than I can the exhaust. I CAN FINALLY HEAR MYSELF THINK... and enjoy the music too
The car feels like a totally different machine. I guess because I don't hear the engine as much the car feels better in acceleration.
Overall... excellent choice for my application. Sounds very much like this Mustang which has the same Super Turbo muffler too.
Cheers!!! ~Ozzy

Re: Need help finding a quiet crossflow muffler
Glad you found something that you like! I ran a stock 4th gen muffler for awhile on my 82 they are 2.75 in and dual 2.5 out but I had a 3.5in I pipe with a cutout under the rear seat longtubes and no cat and it was a very uinique sound I thought I liked it though. Post videos of your new exhaust if you can.
