82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
I've searched the forum but cant seem to get a complete answer. I have a 383 stroker in my 82 camaro z28 w/ approx. 450HP, and a 700r4 tranny. Now, i need to put exhaust on it. It currently has hedman elite shorty headers- painted so will be swapping those out for.... ceramic ones of some sort???
1. I'm going to assume I need 3" exhaust for this- planning on running a single pipe back into duals similar to factory? With that being said, i cant find any 3" y pipes to go with any headers. Im gonna take a stab in the dark here and guess there is no point in running 3" exhaust if the y pipe is 2.5"??
2. Nobody seems to make an exhaust system for an 82 camaro.. All applications start with '83 or newer. Why is this? Is the routing of exhaust similar? If i buy a kit for a newer car up to '92 will it work with minor modifications?
Im sure i will have more questions soon, but this will get the ball rolling. Thanks

82-92 are all the same. the chassis barely changed at all. the only thing i noticed changes was the floor pans but only one part of it. it should work, and you cna run a 2.5 in y pipe into a 3 in. id honeslty run duals, but its your car

Re: 82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
how much you willing to spend?
Dyno Dons headers and Y pipe, 3inch cat back magnaflow, or flowmaster.
If you go true duals you lose clearance as you can read in plenty post, Apperently power gains are not worth it. Dyno dons headers have proven to make great numbers, and they are shorties. No ground clearance problems.

Re: 82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
I'm running HED-68470 Headers with a HED-17478 Y pipe (Both Hedman) And a FLO-17151 Force II Flowmaster exhaust(my kit came with the 30series muffler, now I think they use a 50series) with no cats and It works and sounds great. I'm making 350 to 400hp not 450hp like you are but I'm sure it would get the job done. These part numbers are from Summit Racing. Good luck!!

Dyno Don y-pipes are 2.5. Also the colletors on the headers are 2.5in.

Re: 82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
Here's what ive come up with... need some feedback if this is what i might want...
Headers- Hedman Elite Hedders- thermal coated- HED-68478 summit part #
Y-Pipe- Hedman y-pipe- has 2.5 inch ID outlet diameter - HED-17478 summit website
Cat-back- flowmaster american thunder exhaust w/80 series mufflers- 3" throughout- FLO-17233 on summit

Re: 82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
I'm in the same boat here, for right now, I have hooker 2460 shorties and their 6767 y pipe/ off road pipe and a Jegs 3" cat back. I adapted the 2 1/2" y pipe and off road pipe to the 3" cat back with a flowmaster cone shaped collector adapter til i can find a proper y pipe.
All i had to do was cut the flare off the cat back, measure to fit, and cut the ball flange plus about 16" off the off road pipe, and clamp 'em together. I seem to recall in another post i made about the same thing that somebody came up with a solution. I'll try to find it.

Re: 82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
I am redoing my exhaust right now. I have a 355 est. HP 400-450. It has Hooker shorties, 2.5 ypipe and no cat. I bought these 2 parts through summit, FLO-26001 and FLO-26019. They are the over axle pipe and rear intermediate pipe from a flowmaster catback. I did not buy a complete flowmaster system because thier mufflers are chambered and not free flowing. Then I got 2 45 degree 3" mandrel bent sections and 1 3" 90 madrel bend. These are all dynomax pieces. I also got a 4' piece of 3" aluminized straight pipe. I am using a dynomax ultra flow knock off I bought on amazon. Fully welded stainless steel, built exactly like the dynomax only alot cheaper.

With these parts and some stainless steel band clamps I have less than $250 into the hole system.

Re: 82 camaro 383 stroker complete exhaust help
So i got my exhaust done finally. I went with ceramic hedman headers, as already had there y pipe. I hacked the y pipe off where both sides meet up, as was 3" diameter here(Cut off the 2.5inch part), welded a 3" 90degree off summits website there. Then i bought flowmaster cat back system off summit and a cut out (welded it in where the cat would be). All I had to do was buy a 45 degree bend piece and a short piece of straight 3 inch pipe. Looks awesome, 80 series muffler sounds awesome, and engine runs so much better now it can breathe. Thanks for the help!!
Part numbers from Summit
Thunder cat back- FLO-17233
Exhaust cut out 3"- SUM-670137
90 degree elbow 3"- WLK-41365
45 degree elbow 3"- WLK-42760 (2 of these i think i used?)
Hedman Elite Headers- HED-68478
Hedman y-pipe- HED-17470
and then about a 3 foot piece of 3" exhaust pipe from local shop
