check engine light coming on? Check the Coolant Temperature sensor. It may not be reading coolant temps correctly. Therefore making the computer think the car is cold when it is hot. So then it dumps a ton of fuel into the engine and it doesnt burn properly. But how is the car running? Also check your egr function. What #'s are high on the test results? To really get the best advice you should post your #'s on here so the guys who know thier smog #'s better can chime in and help you.
Re: emissions failer can someone help
i have changed the coolant sensor as well and my numbers are
Hydrocarbons (HC)-- carbon monoxide (CO) ---oxides of nitrogen (NOx)
to pass 0.80-------- 15.00------------------- 2.50
im at --19.87------- 27.50------------------- 0.33
---------FAIL------- FAIL-------------------- PASSED
the one i passed say the EGR is working right and i dont know how to fix this

pretty good but kind of bad? Is taking the car to a reputable test and repair station out of the question? did you check the compression when you had the spark plugs out?

the one thing i know if your cats are working and EGR then you can pass emissions no matter what but there cant be leaks and just change the timming and makes the car run hot but i want it to run right and i have leaks at the cat the y pipe fell off that send air to the cats

smelling fuel means rich......maybe injectors are not the same constant as in the computer....bad fuel pressure...tps set wrong.....off a tooth in the dist.

Check the base timing. See if it's set at 6°. If you changed the distributor, than the timing has to be checked.
