Exhaust setup??????????????
Ok heres the deal, in kinda shitty situation, so i have a 1992 camaro tpi, i tore that out and put a 350 carb, no emissons.
So heres the deal, so i put a summit 7 quart oil pan before i put the engine in, it went in fine with no issues, but the factory Y pipe did not fit to the headers on the drivers side.....so i went to muffler shop near my house, and they did somthing stupid, they closed the end of y pipe that connects to driver side, and it appears that he ran a 2 inch or 2.15 in across the whole car then attaches to the extension pipe before my flowmaster muffler.....
sounds o.k but i its soo close to the ground and im prob lossing massive hp.
so i think im gonna jack the engine up and put the factory pan back on so i can connect to the y pipe, and just bolt new exhausts in, so i would need to by a new y pipe and extention pipe.
all ive seen that they sell that would bolt in was a 2.5 y pipe and extention pipe. what should i do??????????? should i just go to 3 " do they make a bolt on..?????
the bottom of my engine is build, but i didnt do the heads. im running a edl 650, but when i do the heads over, im puttin bigger cam, and i already have a edl 750. so i just want to do the exhaust over in a year or two to a 3 in. i rather do it right the first time!
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR SUGGESTIONS!

Re: Exhaust setup??????????????
I'm no expert, but I see nothing wrong with 2.5in exhaust. I feel like it's plenty for 90% of motors out there (in our cars). Gases like everything else contract as they cool - there's alot of cooling taking place between the exhaust ports of the heads and the Y-pipe, so flow isn't as crucial by that point - cooler gases means less mass so less need for "space" for them to flow in. I don't have any hp monster by any means, but I'm confident that my 350 has plenty of exhaust flow now, and will continue to later when more hp is "added". I'm running 3" collector that dumps into a Y-pipe that lessens to 2.5 inches, then stock cat and I-pipe back to a Hooker Aerochamber.
Re: Exhaust setup??????????????
OK- stop blaming the shop. They only perform work that is APPROVED by the person that brings them the car.
Who brought the vehicle and paid for the work? You need to see the work order because you aren't even sure what was installed. If it was 2 1/2 inch then you are fine and aren't "losing massive HP"
Oh, stock factory y pipes won't fit aftermarket headers so again, the person that brought the car to the shop knew that and that is why it went to the shop.

Re: Exhaust setup??????????????
he never said anything about using a factory Y-pipe, just the factory oil pan. besides most shops ive been to have you approve the work before they do it, if thats the case he wouldnt have known what it was gonna look like until it was done. thats why i dont really deal with shops too much, the ones around me are rip off artists, not saying they all are, just the ones near me. and to answer your question, if you have headers you have to go to the company that made them and buy the Y-pipe, if you have factory manifolds, you can use the stock Y or there are prolly some pretty decent aftermarket options, the only 3 inch Y ive ever heard of though is made by SLP and thats just to match the headers. i could be wrong though

correct and I believe that I stated such.

Huh, and to my point, I suspect that the OP was not the authorized person who ok'd the work. In the event that the OP was the person to approve and pay for the work, then caveat emptor. You don't "approve" something that you don't understand. Now buyers remorse is something completely different and to find the responsible party for that, simply look into a mirror.

Re: Exhaust setup??????????????
lol ok guys no need to argue. i bought this car with headers, when i put the 350 in i use the same headers, just painted and wraped them, so i dont even know what the factory manifold y pipe looks like. im just going with what i have.
all the shop had to do is make a 6 in pipe that went around the drivers side oil pan...and into the "Y pipe i bought the car with" but they did that crap. they didnt call me for options. i mean comon my camaro is low enough and they ran it underneath my tranny pan.....thats common sense that its way too low.
Two i never go to shops because if feel they dont treat it as there own so i try to do everything my self, but i cant make pipes at home. just like "ummm" said, i dont think every shop is like that.
Buttt now that were calmed down, should i just keep the deep pan? do i really get any benifit from it besides more oil, keeping it alittle cooler? its pretty low, it is level with the K member, and if i was to keep it...what could i buy that would fit that as far as a Y-pipe?
Sorry for the stupid questions. i bought the car with the headers and y pipe, i want to do it once and not again. i payed that shop 250 to get that hack job done, i should of just did it right the first time. Therefor im not doing it a 3rd. i just dont want to put my new heads and cam and big carb on, and then have to go with bigger exhaust.
Sorry for confusion guys!!!!!! no need for fighting were all chevy 3rd gens here! i can see if i had a mustang you could fight! lol

Re: Exhaust setup??????????????
if your not racing the car then i see no reason to run the bigger pan, if its just a street car the factory pan should be just fine. would keep it from scraping on bad bumps too. and i wasnt tryin to fight, just point out what i saw to a guy who was just tryin to put you down, i was tryin to point out that you werent tryin to buy a factory y for headers, wouldnt fit. i guess if you take it back to a shop and decide to keep the deeper pan, you should go in and tell them exactly how you want it run, that way you get what you want and everyone is happy.

yeah i know.......that message wasnt attended to you..to the other one, im on your side! but yea hopefully i can prop up tranny to take this extented pan out without removing the motor? then i guess ill go with the hedman 2.5 exhaust y-pipe and I-pipe? I just plan in a couple of years to upgrade my heads cam and carb, and i would hate to buy a 3 inch..it would **** me off

I also provided SOUND advice that a shop looks for approval or sign off prior to doing any work. Getting angry at a shop who was given "approval" is a waste of effort.
the OP also wasn't sure of the size of the pipe and I once again provided sound advice that if it is 2 1/2 inches then he would be fine.
If there is a clearance issue, then that is another topic and the OP would be wise to enter into negotiations with the shop about a re-do.
I would ask the shop to explain why they ran the pipe where they did.

do you still have the engine hoist? It's going to be tough trying to yank out that pan and put on the stocker unless you can get some serious height.

Re: Exhaust setup??????????????
no i dont, i was gonna put the h balancer line facing down, unbolt mounts, take off dizzy. and lift with tranny then hopefully slide it under the k member. i think the back of the pan is thiner than a factory pan. so if i slide it towards the noise of the car it "SHOULD" slide off? the only thing that worrys me is the extended oil pickup..

what a pain
do you have anything including some chunks of wood to try and lift the front of the engine? You might need to drop the drive shaft and disconnect the torque arm and tranny crossmember so you can have the tranny tailshaft angle downward.
I've only replaced gaskets with the engine still in a 3rd and 4th gen, never the entire pan.
Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
