How do I hook this Y-pipe up?

The hell? Am I out $375? I've never done exhaust work but I don't see how this is going to fit. or even where to start.

This came with matching headers (both Headman) for a 3rd gen F body with a 350 in it. The headers should hook up to my motor and this should hook up to my stock exhaust....or so I've been told.

The stocker is a 2-bolt ball and flange and that Hedman looks like a 3-bolt gasket type collector. Are the new headers 2 or 3 bolt? Did it come with the left side collector? It's not in the pic.

Re: How do I hook this Y-pipe up?

The y-pipe on the top looks as if it "will" bolt up the stock two bolt flanges on the exhaust manifolds. Not too sure whats goin on on the passengers side collector.... A better picture would be great. Looks almost like a stock piece.

The Y-pipe on the bottom is a Hedmen y-pipe for a ball and socket header set. And is apparently missing the Driver's side collector?

Do you have pictures of the headers?

Re: How do I hook this Y-pipe up?

Is that my cat btw? The exhaust I have in here was from the previous owner, he had a dual split system at the rear for 2 pipes out of this main one and a huge box shaped muffler they come out of. If that is the cat, it's gutted. He welded everything to everything else, and wedged some of the pipes into each other till they cracked. It's a hack job, and I can't tell if it won't work with my new exhaust or if it's my inexperience.

Looks like you got everything. Put the headers on, use the Hedman Y-pipe, and if you want to reuse that cat, cut it off and put it on the new system.

Yea but how am I going to get that old pipe with the cat off the Y pipe and onto the new one? And how will it reach?

cut it off and then you can try and mess with adapters and clamps or you can get it welded.

I just put on the exact header and y pipe a month or so ago and then used a reducer to my cat delete. No leaks, nada

OH, if you aren't using Percys Seal 4 Good or Mr Gasket dead soft aluminum gaskets prepare for leaks. Yes, they cost $30 but well worth the investment

you are also going to have to have an O2 bung welded into the collector

This is actually the culmination of my 350 swap from a 74 Nova into the Firebird, so I don't need any sensors This is the last part, and I didn't think I'd have to weld or buy anything else. My funds are dry, I thought I could slide this into place and bolt it on or something.

Re: How do I hook this Y-pipe up?

Negative on the bolt-in replacement.

Here's how I see it...
1) Install the headers.
2) Attach the y-pipe to the passenger side header
3) Attach the small adapter to the driver side header, so as to
determine fitment for welding into the y-pipe.
4) Weld the adapter into the y-pipe
5) Cut the cat off the old y-pipe, far enough away from the cat
to provide enough length to meet the new y-pipe. 8 - 10 inches
ought to be plenty.
6) With new y-pipe installed (& fastened to both headers), install cat
into rest of old system, so as to determine where to fit cat into
new y-pipe.
7) Trim cat inlet pipe as necessary, then weld to y-pipe.
8) Re-install y-pipe/cat to headers, cat to rest of system.
9) Celebrate w/ a sufficient quantity of adult beverages.

How to accomplish the welding is up to you...

PS
An O2 bung into headers if necessary.

Good luck, and post some pics of the finished pieces.

Well technically if it came on the car when it rolled out of the factory it needs to at least be there. As my professor says, "it just needs to look like it could work on a car of your age.

My main worry was having to buy more piping...are you guys saying this will work with my existing setup? I have a welder, I just never used it before I need to learn.

The kit came with a bunch of adapters and U-clamps too.

Re: How do I hook this Y-pipe up?

I just installed this setup on my camaro. First step is to hook up the headers. Then connect the y-pipe to the passenger side. Adjust and mark the adapter for the drivers side to fit correctly. Measure distance from back of y-pipe to old exaust. Pull off the y pipe and weld adapter in place. Then cut off old cat and weld it to the new y pipe. Install and enjoy. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask. You can use the clamps provided instead of welding, but you will most likely have clearance issues to the oil pan; and a guarunteed exaust leek in the near future.
