Need help with deciding for a catback!
I have two questions:
1. What is the best catback exhaust system I can put on my '86 TA?--I was thinking about getting a magnaflow(I heard it was the best sound and hp gain I could get.)
2. I was also thinking about getting headers for my 305 but I was thinking about switching to a Chevy 400 CU and I'm not sure if they'd work with that.
Thanks, I appreciate your help!

every Magnaflow on a third gen i've heard on YouTube has sounded like crap. too loud. lots of snap, crackle, and pop.
i've heard good things about Hooker Cat Backs. i bought one for my Formula 350, but it isnt on the car yet. *NOTE* the double dual exhaust tips that come with the Hooker Cat Back look like TRASH. i threw mine away and bought some Pace Setter Monza tips.

Re: Need help with deciding for a catback!
1. most of the catbacks are going to flow about the same, so it comes down to what type of material you want to use (stainless is longer lasting but usually more expensive), what sound you like (muffler) and what type of tailpipes you want
i liked my hooker setup on my 89 RS, but it wasn't stainless and new england's not very kind to exhaust. I'm going stainless this time around for longer life. you can always change out the muffler if you don't like the sound, so don't worry about having to start from scratch if you don't like it first time around.
2. while both use the same bolt pattern, but the flow needs for a 305 are usually a bit less than a 400; what you need for the 305 will probably be too small for the 400 but will still technically fit

hooker aerochamber cat back is a nice sound and the borla catback is an amazing sounding catback.
If I were you id get long tubes and a custom exhaust, long tube hedmans can be had used for 100 plus 400 for a great custom true dual setup.

Re: Need help with deciding for a catback!
hooker super comps are some of the best longtubes you can get but you need a custom exhaust at minimum to get them to work on your car...i got quoted 400 for a cheap true dual setup...i went the even more exspensive route and paid a grand for a true dual mandrel bent exhaust with borla mufflers and chrome tips. Hedman long tubes are similar to the hookers and more than enough for a mildly built 350 look on craigslist or ebay youll find it for 100-175 easy plus a cheap true dual exhaust like i said and for 500-600 youll have more than enough exhaust for up to 350hp.

or do hedman short tube headers with matching ypipe and itll bolt up to stock catback, then go with the aerochamber catback and youll be set with a good flowing great sounding exhaust
