Does anyone build Custom Y-Pipes?

I've checked with all my local muffler shops and NO ONE can bend or build a custom 3" y-pipe. Does anyone on here make a y-pipe for there setup? I'm going to be running Hooker 2460HKR shorty headers with a 3" Magnaflow cat and exhaust system. I'd pay someone to make me a y-pipe if someone can bend and weld.

Re: Does anyone build Custom Y-Pipes?

If you have tools and a crap welder it should be easy enough to order piping, fit, cut, and tack it and take it to a shop to have it finished. That's what I did to get my Mufflex setup to fit correctly. Else try contacting the local auto service places they might be able to make you one. I would shy away from anyplace wanting to do normal kink type bends.

I personally don't have any tools or knowledge to do the job nor do I know anyone. As far as the shops go, No one within 50 miles listed that does mufflers or exhaust have a mendrel bender. Only one said they would touch the 3" stuff, But again the only way they can bend the pipe is with alot of kninks over 60*. I'm sure by looking at the Y-Pipe Hooker makes for these shortys there's ALOT of 90* bends which according to them will be all kinked to hell and not look very pretty was there exact words. They did tell me that it's pointless to make a 3" Y-Pipe when all your doing is running dual 3" Y's into a single 3" exhaust line. They said I should stick with the prefab that Hooker already makes because they don't see any real performance gain or benefit. The one shop did suggest buying the Hooker Y setup and the Magnaflow 3" Y and they could cut of the 2-1/2 Y from the Hooker setup and weld in the 3" MagnaFlow Y. By the time I do all that I'd have over $300 invested in just piping and that wouldn't include modification or install. I've been told on several forums that a custom Y with install should only run around $200.

Re: Does anyone build Custom Y-Pipes?

I'm pretty sure either straightline performance or finish line performance does mandrel bends.. both those shops are out Joliet way...

If you have a friend with a welder making a y pipe is pretty easy...

I fabbed one earlier this year a true 3 inch to 4 inch for my formula all I did was buy bends from summit and tinker toy it together...

If you wanna buy my whole exhaust we could maybe work out a deal...

Lemme know what you wanna do and I'll see if i can help

I think a 3 inch y pipe maybe a little overkill. You should look at one of Dyno Don's 2.5 inch y pipe. Best one on the market, I have one on my car, fits and works great

Why would I want to use a 2.5 inch y pipe when I have 3 inch header collectors and a 4 inch exhaust?

Re: Does anyone build Custom Y-Pipes?

you may lose some torque when going to a 3 inch y pipe. May be to much for your combo.

3" won't even fit without hanging lower than the X member by a considerable amount, 2.75 is the largest you will be able to snake in front of the pan. 3" collectors to short 3" sections necking down to 2.75:

I think there is plenty enough restriction in the bullshit shorty headers....

Re: Does anyone build Custom Y-Pipes?

I thought hedman sold a 3" ypipe seperately? I know hooker has one with the 2055's but I dont think they sell seperately and dont think it works with the 2460's.

3" single is perfect for a bolt on L98 or mild cammed setup up to 330whp or so. After that you should try 3.5" up to 400whp. 4" at 400 and higher.

Either way it's better than the factory cast manifolds. According to Car Craft factory inner diameter of passenger manifold was 1.550"!

Not as much better as you would think... a 1 5/8ths primary is 1.625 outside diameter when you account for wall thickness there really isn't a whole lot there.

Considerably is a matter of opinion...

That picture is deceptive if it's 3/4 of an inch that's a lot... And as everyone with a thirdgen knows having a good exhaust on one of these cars means sacrificing ground clearance somewhere there is really no way around it..

Hooker 2055's are at about 1.92". You can cut them open to 2.25" which will make alot of difference on a hotter motor that still needs shorties. Its a crappy ball/flange type collector so its not going to have the scavenging ability of a custom collector that you see on most longtubes and race designed setups. They should make midlengths for these cars with a good collector on them. Dyno Don's have the primary size, and support power, but I think they could be improved with a better shaped collector.

I agree... the header options for these cars is nothing short of complete crap. The only option that really makes any sense is a turbo system that way you can use boost to overcome a bad headers and ground clearance issues.

Re: Does anyone build Custom Y-Pipes?

If you have any fab skills, making your own headers or turbo manifolds makes sense. If you have to make a manifold, might as well set it up for turbo and do a budget setup

Yea i've been planning on that for a while.. I actually have been sitting on a bbs manifold for a while but lack the funds to even get my car back on the street right now let alone buy a turbo and associated parts
