header/y-pipe question

I've got the factory dual-cat setup on my camaro, and I'd like to add some aftermarket headers to my car. I know of some y-pipes that are made for the dual-cat setup but they're serious bank..I'm on a bit of a budget and was just curious of what my options are?

If I need to fork over some dough to get a good flowing y-pipe then I guess I better start collecting my cans now lol.

Re: header/y-pipe question

Haha alright then cool, I guess I'll just do that then. Can anyone recommend some good headers with the air tube that are fairly well priced as well?

Re: header/y-pipe question

You will have to cut the ends off of your stock ypipe close to where they bolt up to the stock exhaust manifolds and either have a shop fabricate the new ends for you to bolt up to your headers or buy the ypipe that matches from the same header manufacturer.

Re: header/y-pipe question

Ok for example I go with the method where I re-use my stock piping and get them modified, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the headers? Or is the stock piping on a dual-cat car have a decent enough diameter to allow good flow?

Re: header/y-pipe question

Your fine if you have the dual ypipe (N10)option. Comparable to a 3" single pipe. The dual ypipe added something like 10hp over the single. What i did was install the headers myself and had the stock dual ypipe modified. Cost me $92 to have the welding done.

Re: header/y-pipe question

Modified how so? To fit the 3" collector on the headers? If so then $100 ain't too bad. Good to know that the dual-cat piping was good for 10hp over the single cat cars

And yeah I believe there's only one way the dual-cat car pipes work, 2 seperate pipes come down off of the collectors, both go into 2 seperate cats and then after the cats Y into the intermediate pipe correct?

I refuse to call the piping after the headers y pipes because no where in the piping does it y LOL

If you choose to keep the dual ypipe setup, it will be a lot easier for you to just cut your dual ypipes off at about 6 inches from where they connect to the exhaust manifolds, remove your exhaust manifolds, install your headers, drive to the shop (don't get a ticket for noise) and then have a shop fabricate the rest for you

Gotcha, cool well I appreciate your input on my little dilemma here haha. Puts my mind a bit more at ease about the whole thing when the time comes to put some headers in!
