Re: Flowmaster Haters???
I absolutely love my Super 44 Flowmaster's!!! My exhaust is "TRUE" Dual. Driver side header then straight back to the muffler which is located right under back seat with tail pipe curling just behind axle down and outwards so exhaust pushes out just behind the tire. Passenger side is the same way. No Cross over pipes, no cats no nothing.. Just 2.5" straight pipes to the mufflers! I dont splat at WOT but it does give off a light whistle though and makes it sound like I have a turbo haha.. I get asked that a lot.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
I wouldn't want them on any thirdgen. I personally like the factory sound. They are not supposed to sound like a late 60's or early 70's Muscle Car but as a 80's performance sports coupe. The factory tail pipes have a nice deep rumble and hide nicely under the rear bumper and you barely see them. I went for the Dynomax Super Turbo for a similar factory like sound and I like them compared to the Walker Quiet-Flow it had as a replacement. I would also go for Magnaflow but again with 2.5'' factory style tail pipes. I think Flowmaster sounds better with true dual exhaust cars and great on Mopars.
Factory exhaust system without cat.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
Old thread; didn't feel like contributing before, but now I will.
I bought a Blowmaster back in maybe the 93-4-5 range. Seemed like a good idea at the muffler shop after the stocker rusted out and fell off.
End result was, I. COULD. NOT. STAND. IT. It was like dragging an empty 55-gallon drum around behind me on a 20' chain everywhere I went. It got SO OLD SO FAST, I think it was no more than about 3 days, I was looking for ways to get rid of it.
Couldn't care less about "more power"; that's all well and good, but sometimes, what you gotta give up to get it, renders your car into a giant bucket of zoo dirt instead of the object of your dreams. (especially when no member of the opposite sex will get within a half mile of it) Gotta be more ... open-minded and balanced .... than just, some kinda "max power" dyno number.
Bought a Dynomax and put it on before all the paint was burned off of the Slowmaster. Gave the FM away to one of my littlest half-brother's street-stroke friends who hadn't accumulated the experience to know better yet. Great kid, really liked him, wouldn'ta took his money for it. I don't think it lasted a whole month on his car either.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
For me, the way I see it, It all depends on the car (Year / SubModel / Engine ) And what look and Feel you want it to have... I think it can go either way. Stock or Aftermarket Exhaust depending on what you want to do.
My personal view as I see/feel them is Example: A Stock 1982 Z28 or Trans Am all original never modified, I'd lean towards keeping the original restricted exhaust because I like the throaty old fashioned sound.
But If I wanted to make it louder just for kicks, I'd also want to retain the option to always be able to put it back to stock without much If ANY welding required, because it's a very pristine all original car, so I'd get the 80s Series Flowmaster Catback system and clamp it on and take off the original setup in 1 piece and set it to the side in the garage until I feel like putting it back on.
If you don't ever want to be able to put the car back to original and this is definitely going to be some extensive aftermarket modification project built to stay that way and never look back, then obviously you can afford to sawzall the stock exhaust, and weld in some new extravagant custom built exhaust with dual cats, x-pipes, dumps, Etc.
My '92 5.7 has the complete 80s series 3" Catback setup with tips and all. Still has the stock Dual cats.
That's the way I bought it and I'd never change any of that because I think it's perfect and the car is 98% original so it's staying that way with the biggest mod being that Flowmaster.
I've always wanted a Blue '92 RS 5.0 T-top 25th Anniversary because my neighbors had one all original stock when I was 14.
I'll want it to be exactly the same, it had stock exhaust. So if I find one with a modified exhaust I'd take that off and find a stock setup.
In my view, the majority of Formula, Trans Am, Z28s SS IROC should have an aftermarket exhaust system like the Flow's 3" 80s series because they are the performance line and model of the F-body so they should be a little louder than the 3.1 5.0 RS and base firebird's sound with the stock mufflers.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
I have never liked the sound of flowmaster on any motor domestic or import. Too much drone and it sounds too close to straight pipes which I dont enjoy.
Borla, magnaflow and OBX are some of the better sounding exhausts I have heard on these cars.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
Like I have mentioned in threads before I like the Hooker Aero Chamber.
If I were to go with anything other than the Flowmaster it would be that.
It IMO does have to go with the car and what your aiming for as to looks = sound.
Of course each muffler sounds different on different cars.
That goes for any muffler on any car.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
I have flow masters on my 67 Camaro. When I first bought that car, it was my DD. I was living in Oklahoma at the time so I didn't really need to deal with Salt or the like so I wasn't worried about driving it in the winter. I did however, drive 12 miles to work one way, every day (@ $1.01 a gallon, who cared!!) and the sound (80 series) was horrible. I loved how it sounded when it roared, when I mashed the pedal to go somewhere. I LOVED it. But driving to the gas station, driving home, driving to work, just cruising at 65 on the freeway home became a chore. I could not stand it after about 6 months.
If it wasn't a DD and I NEVER had to drive the car more than 10 miles with Flowmasters on? Yeah, I'd put them on. Otherwise, never again.
On my firebird I am on my third Muffler. The first was a stock turbo muffler that sounded ok. I then swiched to the Aerochmaber and OMFG!!! that sound is so awesome. Cool at idle and cruise but tore it up when you got on it!
When that rusted out I went with a 3" Magnaflow Catback and this is, I'd say one notch down from the Aerochamber. My wife likes it much better though because now we don't have to strain to talk to each other in the car on the way to a meet or cruise. But man can she roar when I open the throttle. The magnaflow is more, understated than either of the other two, a little more mellow, and that's ok. It took me a while, but it really grew on me. When the Magnaflow goes, I'm probably going back to the Aerochamber.
Also, the Aerochamber, from everything I've read, out-flows both the Flowmaster and Magnaflow mufflers.

I had a flowmaster until it rusted out at almost every seam on it. I run a Magnaflow bullet muffler now. Stainless FTW

I've never understood why people want to install a barn door in the exhaust flow....notice flowmasters boxes and advertisements never talk about performance, just sound.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
I always liked my Flowmaster.. it was loud and I had no cat. The neighbors and my parents hated it..
I was never into the Fox body Mustangs with Flowmasters and that, “Woo Wooo” sound.. Camaros always sounded more muscle to me.. more growl
I love my Magnaflow because it’s present at high RPM and sounds almost stock at idle.. just a little extra growl at idle.. people get shocked when you rev it..
I always liked the SLP Exhaust on the Camaro SS cars in the 90s.. not sure if that’s what TTop350 was talking about, but I like that SLP..
The Flowmaster did get old on highway trips.. especially without a cat

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
To answer the question, I don't like the Flowmaster drone. i actually removed mine before really getting on the boards and realizing many people felt the same way.
But....it's opinion as to what sounds best. As for performance, I don't think any crossflow muffler performs as well and any straight through muffler.
FWIW...I'm a fan of the Hooker.
And to anybody that does or does NOT buy a certain system because of the exhaust tips...REALLY!?!?!?!? I mean....REALLY!?!?!?!??

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
I absolutely love my flowmaster.......just thinking about it makes me want to drive the car randomly....
I've had the 80 series American Thunder catback since 1999.....replaced once.
Maybe it's not the best for performance, but the car will run 117 mph in the quarter.
Another muffler might get me another mph or 2. But the sound is more important to me.
I get compliments all the time.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
From the time I was 16 in the mid ninties everything I ever owned had to have flowmaster. I've had built small blocks running through single chamber flowmaster, delta series, and have a flowmaster on my GTA currently. I'm done and over them. Soon as funds let me I'm gonna have all new exhaust and leaning towards borla or magnaflow. The drone has gotten old. After some research I will decide which way to go but I'm looking for mellow until I stand on it.

Re: Flowmaster Haters???
Actually I have watched about a dozen videos since I previously posted and I am very interested. Would love to hear a set up close. All the sound clips I've heard they sound mellow from idle to medium throttle and sound sinister when they hammer down on them. Got to find someone local with a set on a small block.

I love the sound of Flowmasters, and I actually enjoy the road drone, but to each his own.
When you start insulting people who prefer one brand over another it really makes you look like a child.
