Edelbrock Headder Question

Hey Everyone, a few years back I installed edelbrock ceramic headders with the AIR system on my 84 Z28 305 H.O. Since then the Y pipe has completely rotted out just before the CAT. I searched a bit on Edelbrocks website and I cant find any evidence that they even make headders anymore. Does anyone know where I can find a bolt on replacement Y pipe for this application?

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

I was able to locate a replacement Y pipe. The old Y-pipe is swiss cheese now, it rotted at a much faster rate than the rest of the exhaust, which is still in decent shape. I can literally peal it apart like an orange. My new question: Is there anything that I can treat the replacement Y-Pipe with to make it last longer in the long run, because my guess is that I am not going to find another Y-Pipe 5 years from now, so I need to make this one last as long as I can.
What product would it be, and what is the process if any?

Eastwood Hi-Temp Internal Exhaust Coating and their DIY Ceramic Coating for headers. Just make sure you don't paint the catalytic converter from the inside or it will not work anymore. Where did you find the replacement y?

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

We called Edlebrock last year(?) and ordered a replacement Ypipe 4 a customers car. Not everything is listed on the web. I bet they could build a Ypipe anytime since its all programed in the exhaust bender.
Sometimes a phone call is needed when you cant find a part..

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

A phone call to Edelbrock was my first step. Its how I found out that their exhaust lineup was discontinued. I asked the phone representative if there was any way I could get the replacement pipe through them and he said no. I even emailed them with further information and a second request and that has gone unanswered.

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

Do you remember what phone number you used to call Edelbrock because I would still rather get a new pipe from them, the one I found is used. I called their 1800 number.

That should do it. Not a terrible price too.

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

Im not sure that would work on my 84... it says 86 to 90, not that I am sure what the difference is. This is a picture of that product and a picture of the Y pipe that I recieved slightly used for my application, followed by the current Y pipe installed on my car now.

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

You may have to upgrade. Since there is a Y-pipe on your car, take it to a guy that can fab one up with mandrel bent stainless steel. It's expensive, but will last forever.

Biggest difference is that the HO version of the Edelbrock Y-pipe has a 4 bolt flange to allow it to bolt up to the stock CAT (which I'll assume you're running).

I'm actually upgrading my exhaust and putting my nickel plated Edelbrock headers and slightly modified 4 bolt y-pipe up for sale. They are an HO set. I even have a pretty new CAT with the flanges that's only a few years old.

You really need to find a 83-84 HO version....or...You could do what Nelz says, and have a new Y-pipe made....but that'll be pretty costly and would be an upgrade if you had it made in SS as far as "longer lasting" goes....but it won't "breathe" any better.

You're kinda stuck either finding a 4 bolt Y-pipe, or converting to a newer non flange type. Unless you have some welding skills - then the sky's the limit...

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

If you search around, I would say that maybe instead of trying to save your headers, flow wise you should switch them out for Hooker Long Tubes or Dyno Don's. The TES headers have their primaries are mashed together.

I'd normally agree entirely on this if you running a 350 or above, but the TES headers and a good 3" catback is all you'll need for a decent 305. And no, I'm not knocking what Nelz suggests...just MO. I had my TES headers for years and I liked them. And they're still in good shape. Are they the lowest restriction 1-5/8" primary headers out there? - No. There's better.

But - since I switched to a 400 AND put a small blower on it, I needed more breathing room which is the only reason I personally opted for a set of Dyno Don's headers - and they're not cheap by any means...although they are great quality. Long tubes are a good solution, but on these Thirdgens, ground clearance becomes an issue with LT's.

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

Fabrication seems to be the best option.

The work involved to swap out my headers is too involved and too expensive right now, especially when the ceramic coating on them has preserved them so well. Its just the Y-Pipe that is of issue.

I dont know what part numbers will work, it seems like you have to get lucky on ebay like I did or find someone in a forum like this... other wise it seems like fabrication is the only other way to go. The pipes that subroc posted appear that they would work but they may still have to be slightly modified by the installer depending on the year / application.

Re: Edelbrock Headder Question

If you have edelbrock headers that you havent installed yet, I wouldn't recommend installing them for the reason that they are discontinued and it is so hard to find replacement parts for them, it will only lead to expense later.
