So yesterday I went to get a flowmaster 80 series put on my 84 z28(5.0) engine, and hwne they finished my engine sounded pretty much close to stock. I dont really hear any diference. I called back and they said that its kus I dont have a H.O motor and I tol dthem that my 87 2.8 liter V6 sounded a lo loudr than this and that wasnt a HO motor....do you guys have anything??

I was thinking of taking it off next week and putting in a single chamber flowmaster??what do you think??Or is my engine hat weack that it wont make a loud agressive sound...I got a LG4 engine I beleive....thanks!

Re: FLOWMASTER INSTALLED...PLEASE HELP!

80-series Flowmasters aren't loud. Get the 40-series if you want loud.

Do you have a stock cat on the car? if so that's going to quiet it down a lot.

Re: FLOWMASTER INSTALLED...PLEASE HELP!

Your convertor, y-pipe, and manifolds make a huge difference. The 80-series, while being quiet for a Flowmaster, usually isn't that quiet.

Have you checked for a plugged/restricted cat?

x2 im running short headers with no cats and she has a rumble, at night i have to make sure not to wake my neighbors... just on my street haha!

my advice would be to keep your 80 series and upgrade infront of that if you want a different tone. my next muffler is going be something other than flow master.

Easy tests-

Does it sound different when cold versus once warmed up (more muffled when hot)?

When fully warmed up, how hot is the exhaust at the tailpipe? Usually you can stick your hand in front and it will get warm, but a plugged cat will feel like very little air coming but screaming hot.

More in-depth-

Put a vacuum gauge on it- once it kicks off high idle (choke), check the vacuum reading at idle. Take it out and run it good, and check in again. Usually, you can see a decrease in idle vacuum the hotter it gets...

Re: FLOWMASTER INSTALLED...PLEASE HELP!

Did you put back the stock tail pipes? Or it came with them. The smaller diameter tail pipes quieted my car way down to almost stock sound.

Re: FLOWMASTER INSTALLED...PLEASE HELP!

The 40 and the single are the same thing. I've had my 40 series a long time once you change out the headers and y pipe it makes a huge difference.

Re: FLOWMASTER INSTALLED...PLEASE HELP!

If the 80 series sounds like stock its got to be that everything else is stock. I'm driving the 5.0 TBI Auto. and I installed the full American Thunder 3in. Flowmaster 80 series with 3in. tail pipes that have been cut back with a high flow Magnaflow cat and its far from sounding stock. When I start the car it sounds like a loud growl and at idle its far from quiet. At WOT its a beast and has the 80 series tone that comes on nice and loud, NO popping or rattle (for me at least). . I honestly think its got to be the stock cat and stock piping including the stock tail pipes if that's what your running. I also have the stock manifolds and Y pipe because of CA smog laws but it hasn't held it back. Love it. Conclusion would be that with just a muffler change (any muffler)you will not get the "full" effect your looking for without at least a high flow cat and a 3in. cat back.

Re: FLOWMASTER INSTALLED...PLEASE HELP!

Are you sure the muffler that was on it was the stock one? Is it possible it was already a flowmaster 80?

Can you take a picture of the muffler? The stock and the flowmaster look a bit different.

I had an 80 on stock manifolds/y-pipe/catback with a gutted cat, and it still sounded pretty raunchy for a stock L03. The gutted cat will make a difference, but I still have a hard time believing it would be quiet. The Flowmaster 80s are very medium loudness. My ears would be buzzing on long drives with it.
