Short Dual Exhaust Idea

Ok, so I was on my way to work this morning when I hit a bump and my test tube completely broke where it connects to the y-pipe. So after I got off work today I came home and was trying to rig it but I didn't have the supplies to do so. I ended up taking it out for a spin and was actually kind of happy with the power gain, while minimal, that I had got from it, despite not being able to hear myself think. On the low end it was a little but at the top end was where I really felt the difference. I had been looking for cheap dual exhaust ideas and after fiddling with my car and looking through my new jegs magazine, I got an idea

I have always been interested in a dual design that exits in front of the rear wheels. So here's the idea:

Hedman Long Tubes:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Hedman/500/68460/10002/-1

Purple Hornies:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Flowtech/387/50230/10002/-1

Then use some exhaust pipe to route it to exit in front of the wheels. Or, I was going to use the Hedman headers and run them into the purple hornies glasspack and then run the exit out in front of the tires. So either:

header-muffler-exhaust pipe
or
header-pipe-muffler-pipe

I assume this will give a little better performance advantage over a cat-back system and like the guy at the autoparts place said:
"It will help warm your tires so they stick like slicks"

So what do you guys think? I don't have to worry about emissions and I don't feel that it would be too loud, so I think I might try it when I get the funds.

I think you should look under the car and see what there's room to do first.

Re: Short Dual Exhaust Idea

I thought there was a factory option for 1LE or Champion race cars that had an exhaust exiting to the side, near the rear wheels?

I agree Apeiron, I'm gonna take some measurements tomorrow when I get off work and see what I've got to work with. As far as clearance goes for the headers and mufflers I don't think I would have a problem. My only worry would be the actual exhaust pipe scraping on the side. I could always have it go through the side skirt itself but I dont know if I wanna start chopping into those.

And Peter I heard the same, IIRC a guy was advertising an exhaust setup like that a while back on craigslist and I think I might still have the pics somewhere. But he did mention about it coming from a 1LE car but I could be wrong.

Re: Short Dual Exhaust Idea

You can do the exhaust however you like. Look at pics in the dual exhaust thread. You just need to figure out if you like ground clearance or not. Hell, my single 3" system hangs kind of low.

My car is low though.

I dont think you could relaly consider a race-only exhaust system not available to the general public as a "factory option".

There's just not much room up there for stuff like that under the car anyway.

Re: Short Dual Exhaust Idea

Duels can be done, but I have never seen them done right in person on a 3rd gen. A single 3" will flow great and still tuck in the stock location for that clean look. Right now I have a 2.5" 24" long summit glass pack with about a foot long spout on it in place of the cat and it kinda sounds like a Chevy truck, but not too bad. I think what I am gonig to do is extend it back to in front of the rear axle and dump it there. Yeah open Y-pipe is very loud! The purple hornies are kinda big and tend to hang down. They are made to bolt to the headers and are not made to have pipes hook to them as they have built in turndowns. Anything can be done if you have the time and money, let us know how it turns out.
