Best exhaust layout?

I am putting a 350 in my 86 and am looking for a new exhaust. I was thinking of having duals dump right before the rear tires or have the exhaust run just under the doors and them empty before the rear tires. What are people's opinions and does anyone have a good diagram or picture of the under belly of a thirdgen?

Re: Best exhaust layout?

I prefer a stock location setup. Duals are nice but there are a lot of clearance issues if not done properly. 3 inch cat backs are a great way to go and can bolt up very easily. Do you have headers or stock manifolds?

I have a stock manifold now. But I plan on putting headers on when I put the new motor in.

Re: Best exhaust layout?

I think the best layout is stock and at least letting it run out the back.

Hate having all that heat trapped up under the car.

There is mine, good clearance, have yet to scrap anything, sounds awesome.

Re: Best exhaust layout?

i used Hooker 2055 headers which come with a Y pipe to match a 3 inch cat. I love mine. Also used magnaflow cat and cat back. If i was you i would check youtube and see what kind of cat back you like based on sound. Most of them are pretty comparable as far as performance goes but headers do make a difference in fitment and performance.

Check out some others too and see what you like. An exhaust shop can also do a nice custom system for you cheaper sometimes. At the end you're going to get what you pay for so don't go cheap if you want quality. And remember the stock exhaust is the worst bottleneck for power on our cars. Upgrades won't do anything for you if the exhaust can't flow well. If you want to go with duals and dump at the axle or in front of the wheels just make sure you do it right or you're going to fight with it down the road again and again to get it right. A properly fitting 3" stock location exhaust is more that enough to handle the kind of power your going to be pushing through it.

Re: Best exhaust layout?

Personally, hooker shorties into true duals down the stock location and out the back, there is plenty of room to run two 2.5in pipes down the route

Re: Best exhaust layout?

As it stands now sound wise, I have a Flo~Pro muffler on it. I love the sound an gets lots of compliments. So I would either want to go with that again or no muffler. I was thinking possibly Flo~Pros plus cut outs. And does anyone know a good exhaust shop in Michigan?

Re: Best exhaust layout?

You will loose a lot of ground clearance with exits ahead of the rear wheels - no reason to rip your exhaust off at a railroad crossing or driveway entrance...

I agree that side exits are not the best idea on our cars, they can look cool if done right, but I say a nice 3" in the stock location is the way to go.

I currently have this and bought the car with it and highly suggest against it for reasons above like ground clearance ( dont park in the yard the grass will go up in flames) and because all the fumes and noise go straight to the cabin where it gets annoying real fast. It's cool for like 15 mins then you either start scraping things or you go to talk to someone or listen to music and you can only hear the exhaust.
