Dyno Don vs. 2055 - Coatings & Corrosion

Hey Everyone!

I'll be buying some headers ASAP. I have a dilemma.

I want to install them once and be done, without corrosion issues. (I'm talking relatively short time, I know nothing lasts forever.)

Dyno Don's - Seems like the go to guy. The only thing that bothers me is no coating on the inside of headers or Y-pipe. I'd want to get his finish blasted off and "Jet-Hotted", for the sole purpose of coating the inside. This would bring me up to well over $1000 total.

Hooker 2055 - I would have A.I.R. welded and send out to get all parts "Jet-Hotted" This may end up a little cheaper in total.

Questions:

Are metals on both brands equal?

How long would Don't last without inside coating?

Why would you & what is involved in test fitting the y-pipe before getting a coating put on them? I don't understand how it works?

If anyone's had Dyno Don's for a while without the inside coated, I'd like to hear how they hold up & if most of you get your Y-pipe coated.

The tubing that Don uses will not rust.

Re: Dyno Don vs. 2055 - Coatings & Corrosion

Are metals on both brands equal? - Ask Don

How long would Don't last without inside coating? - Ask Don....My Edelbrock's lasted 15 years and them I had the stripped and coated. Now saving up for a set from Don.

Why would you & what is involved in test fitting the y-pipe before getting a coating put on them? I don't understand how it works? - To ensure clearance and make sure nothing touches/hits. Ask Don

If anyone's had Dyno Don's for a while without the inside coated, I'd like to hear how they hold up & if most of you get your Y-pipe coated. - Ask the people in Don's Thread (do a search).

I sent Don a PM on this stuff as The Project suggested. I've searched but perhaps missed it.

Re: Dyno Don vs. 2055 - Coatings & Corrosion

Dyno Don just said in a thread about his headers that he can now get the inside coated for a little extra. Ask him about it.

Re: Dyno Don vs. 2055 - Coatings & Corrosion

I've been running the same uncoated steel headers on my IROC since I installed them back in 99 or 2000. The insides are exactly as they were when I took them out of the box, and I sprayed some fairly useless ceramic header paint on the exterior. Other than a little bit of very minor surface rust, they're still fine. I can't possibly imagine that having Don's headers with an uncoated interior will be a problem from a longevity standpoint.

Re: Dyno Don vs. 2055 - Coatings & Corrosion

Headers I have seen only rust significantly on the outside. Oxygen is required for rust, and there is not a lot left after combustion. The exhaust system usually rusts out from the mufflers back, where air (oxygen) can get in from the tailpipe. Regarding getting your headers coated internally, too, it is not for longevity, it is for "double down" thermal insulation.

Well said. When coated outside and INSIDE its just more effective. Keeps the heat IN the exh. a little more.

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna pay him to do the inside as well.

Couldn't hurt...
